Late in 1944, the Allies seem to have the upper hand in the European land war. A combined British and American paratrooper force, led by American general Gavin and British general Urquhart (Sean Connery), plans to take a highway leading from the Netherlands into Germany, so that British ground troops led by Lieutenant General Horrocks (Edward Fox) and Lieutenant Colonel Vandeleur (Michael Caine) can enter enemy territory. But the Allies soon learn that they may be overconfident.

He does not say "End the war you fools" he just answeres the question: "simple, just end the war." 🤷‍♂️

Such a good sequence. The non-answer when he asks about morale "says" so much.

The entrance of Generalfeldmarschall Gerd von Rundstedt sounds so grandeur.

Nice little detail by the writers Gerd Von Rundstedt is wearing and displaying a honorary colonel uniform with his Marshal's Insignia.

Von Rundstedt on his brief retirement in 1938 was given the number 18 of his old Infantry regiment he commanded in the 1920s, whereupon afterwards on his uniform the number 18 appeared above his Marshal's batons on his shoulders' epaulettes.

Love the music in the beginning of this scene. I wish I could find it somewhere.

Is the actor who plays von Rundstedt also in The Longest Day?

In my view, Generalfeldmarschal Gerd von Runstedt was probably the most descent feldmarschal in the German Wehrmacht during ww2.

It was Von Rundstedt that first realized Barbarossa had failed and ordered his Army Group to make a strategic withdrawal and begin building defensive positions to wait out the oncoming winter. Hitler found out and countermanded the order. Von Rundstedt disgusted at this meddling resigned; basically a middle finger to Hitler. And just as Von Rundstedt predicted the German Army narrowly avoided catastrophe sitting out in the open where frostbite took a frightful toll along with incessant Soviet attacks. (A strategic withdrawal with the onset of winter made complete military sense-sit out the winter in defensive positions, shorten supply lines, straighten out bulges in lines to conserve manpower. Instead Hitler made his infamous 'no retreat' order.)

Why the Feldgendarmerie outside the building is stand on guard like that? It isn’t like they are royal guard or something

Similiar dialogue as Lord Vader landed.

everything that he said was true, Belgium was a stumbling block as the allies needed Antwerp for a forward operating base, but the German army were actually holding out and the allies' losses were appalling which is never documented in films!
