We did some urgent care training after the Paris attacks. If you run out of gauze, take whatever you have, rip your t-shirt into pieces if necessary. And no, infection is not an issue when someone is losing blood copiously, especially if the holes are made by shrapnel (thinking of pieces of bones from a guy with stuff and wires in a vest). Infections will be taken care of in a hospital, but it requires the victim to still have enough blood to survive to get there.

Just thinking of stuffing a gun shot wound almost brings tears to my eyes. Probably hurts worst than the initial gun shot wound

Proper gauze is cheaper than a pack of tampons.

Yeach, and then someone have to clean wounds from tampons. In such a situation when you don't have proper gauze it is recommended to use a shirt of causality to pack w wound

Many tampons are made with an anti-coagulant agent. This would be counter productive.

I took first aid classes with a certified NATO instructor and even they say that it's controversial.
On one hand, it does absorb some blood so it doesn't splash everywhere and it's better than nothing
On the other hand, you don't want to embarrass the guy when someone else will have to take tampons out of him in morgue.

Jokes aside, more likely than not, they won't be good enough to stop the bleeding - there isn't enough material to absorb it and they don't expand nearly enough.

Some say you have better odds even with a sock, but I wouldn't bet on it.

If anyone doesn’t know you will only pack at junctional sights . Not into the thorax, abdomen, neck or extremities. If massive bleeding occurs in an extremity use a TQ to control bleeding and an Israeli bandage to wrap the wound.

I feel like this would be better than Celox because the surgeons always complain about removing the hemostatic

I was shown this in South Africa in an industrial first aid course.

Also female pads make a type of Israeli dressing when bandaged with anything onto a wound.

So for a light weight first aid kit put tampons and liners inside because you might get more mileage

tampons with the plastic applicator that allow you to insert is better to use for the 1st aid, and its not a replacement for a pressure dressing, you would want to insert the tampon then add a pressure dressing. obviously if Arterial bleeding you would skip and do tourniquet. but all in all quick clot then pressure would be optimal.

i think the best thing would be to not put yourself in that situation in the first place. Hemostatic gauze will work alot better when packing. that clotting agent works wonders

Nobody said to replace proper gauze but they will work.

Healing wounds and buying time in emergency is 2 separate matters. Check out Kentucky Ballistic's experience a while back. He kept himself alive by putting his own thumb on his wound. It works!
Non-conventional tool you have is better than gucci gear you left

Buy actual certified medical gear instead risking your life by relying on urban legends. Proper packing gauze expands significantly better and provides the necessary pressure to stop the bleeding.

Another thing used in ww1 was the British field dressing
Intended to stop rifle rounds it is pretty much a massive two piece band aid
