Last year my TSH W/REFLEX TO FT4 Result was 6.32 (abnormal range), today it was 3.48 (normal range). I have had hypothyroidism for awhile, but never took any prescription drugs for it. I started taking selenium last Fall. I wanted to heal it myself. By the way, my doctor never told me to take selenium. I had to become my own doctor. I'm so happy to be in the normal range now.

Selenium is also a critical component of the body's system for elimination of toxic heavy metals, including mercury among others. One or two Brazil nuts per day will meet or exceed normal daily requirements.

Selenium is extremely important for those who have hypothyroidism or no thyroid. A lot of people on thyroid medication will be low in selenium and think they’re levels are off or blame the thyroid when in reality they’re low in selenium.

Hello from 🇨🇦. I have been on 200 mcg of selenium for 2 months. I have hypothyroidism and I could never grow my nails, lost a lot of thickness of my hair and I gained 20 lbs. Now I’m just the opposite. 👍🏻

This antioxidant helps lower oxidative stress in your body, which reduces inflammation and enhances immunity.👍

Factoid. I was told by a pharmacist in New Zealand that selenium deficiency is a problem there because their soil doesn’t have it because of its volcanic origins. 🤷‍♂️

Selenium is needed for thyroid T4 to T3 conversion, sperm health for men, glutathione recycling, prevents congestive heart failure, improves immune. Selenomethionine is the best and cheapest source if cannot get enough through the diet

Great video. Regarding the selenium in foods and the soil, my farm is in an area with low selenium in the soil. I must give my calves a shot of selenium within 24 hours of birth or they can die of "white muscle" disease. Only once have I actually seen a newborn down and unable to stand, but within three hours of giving him selenium needle he was up running. If it's not in the soil it won't be in your food no matter how much you eat. On another matter, in 1994 I had a PSA of 5.3 and was sent for a biopsy(50 years old). No cancer, but I read up on the subject and started to take 200mcg of selenium daily. Six months later my PSA was 2.7. I have not had to have a biopsy since, although my PSA did go to 5.88 once when I foolishly had a specialist tell me that in research studies selenium had been shown to give no benefit, and I believed him. Then, I ignored the so-called research and started taking selenium again and soon had the PSA below 5. I am 77 years old. I have worked as a research scientist in industry and university, and about research I have accepted the golden rule, "He who has the gold makes the rules".

Dr. Berry, Always appreciate your info..I took a selenium supplement for several years for the reasons you mentioned. However....when recently diagnosed with High-grade prostate cancer, I began researching causes of prostate cancer and came across a study showing that selenium supplements were associated with a huge increase prostate cancer. Worse yet, this increase was associated with a large increase in the High-grade variety of prostate cancer. It’s too late for me since I recently had a radical prostatectomy, which changes a man’s life in many ways. The study did not find the same increase in cancer when selenium was obtained from food sources.

A single hard-boiled egg provides about 20 mcg of selenium. Pastured ham, beef kidney, and butter are also my top choices for selenium.

Adequate selenium is also necessary for bone health including bone density. So, ostheoporosis could also be a sign of deficiency (but the more obvious deficiency there would be magnesium with calcium loss as a side effect of the body having to mine its bones for the magnesium).

I have 3 Brazil nuts on days I eat...currently fasting alternate day. For those that don't know, it's also possible to get selenium poisoning, which I'm kinda surprised Ken didn't mention. One common way is over consumption of Brazil nuts. The 3 I have is pretty much the max amount recommended, but it really depends on the crop they came from, as to the actual selenium concentration. In other words, you might get away with more than a few a day, but the risk is obviously not worth it.

Speaking of compromised gut function affecting nutrient levels and absorption, I would love a video about the nutrient effects and other possible considerations one might encounter if they had to have their colon removed, and/or also an ileostomy. There aren't many videos out there on this topic, and I know your video would be extremely helpful for many!

Thanks for taking my suggestion!
