You've Been Lied To: Brazil Nuts & Selenium

Yes, you've been lied to: brazil nuts are not the source of selenium that you've been led to believe! Yes, they are definitely the single best food source of selenium out there, but they have a few dirty little secrets that you should know about BEFORE you start eating them.

These secrets are so impactful on their overall benefit that I think it often makes more sense to supplement with selenium as opposed to getting it from brazil nuts.

Here's why:

The selenium content in brazil nuts varies dramatically from nut to nut. Some studies suggest that it's as high as 6 mcg per nut all the way as high as 154 mcg per nut.

The second reason has to do with selenium toxicity. It's easier than you might think to accidentally take too much and when you couple this with the variability in dosing, you're very likely to get much more or much less than you think.

The third has to do with the potential increased risk that taking too much selenium can have on diabetes risk.

The bottom line? Think twice about using brazil nuts as your primary source of selenium. If you want to eat them, then use no more than 1 per day to make sure you stay out of the trouble zone.

I get very tired of people saying what foods are good and then others say the foods are bad.

I rather take Brazil nuts and natural foods over supplements.

I trust natures farmacy over pharmaceuticals in whatever form.

Pushing supplements over real food? How about you fight labeling standardisation practices rather than push corporate supplement companies...

This could have been explained in a single minute.

No one has ever presented with selenium toxicity symptoms from Brazil nuts in any clinical literature. And Brazil nuts are sold as a normal thing to munch on, and they're a staple food of many tribes in the Amazon. I'm not saying there's no downside, but the idea anyone is reaching toxicity through 1 or a dozen brazil nuts a day is completely outside of known observations.

So just eat 2 a day. Theres no downside because it's not enough to hit toxicity limits.

Just wondering…previous video by you said to take Brazil nuts. Now you’re saying not to. What’s up with that???

I'm eating one Brazil nut per day (after soaking it overnight...) To be honest, I don't care if the Selenium content is less in some individual nuts than in others, I'm happy to take the same dose every day because I just love the taste anyway. 🙋‍♂

Brazil nuts are a food and not a supplement. You cannot standardize nutrient content in a food.

The more doctors we listen to on the internet, the more confused we get. One doctor will say one thing and then the other will contradict the other. Give us a break! Seriously, this is frustrating! I say, listen to only one doctor who seems to know what he is talking about. Pick your favorite doctor. I will stick with Dr. Ken Berry. Good luck to all of you. .

“You may find that taking a supplement for your selenium intake is better than relying on food intake as your source of selenium……..By the way, I sell a selenium supplement.” Not necessarily bad, but always makes me suspicious.

I believe, mother natures food is almost always good for our body, just eat all types of fruits, nuts, veggies, fish and meat, don't just eat one type of food, it's like our daily multivitamin. Get enough sunlight, drink plenty of water, excercise and smile and be kind. God bless everyone. ✌️😊

I've been eating 2 Brazil nuts for the past 20 years and so far so good. Selenium os also great for your prostate and helps prevent prostate cancer. O don't see myself quitting them any time soon as O take Lugol on a daily basis. Your videos are awesome! I came across them just about an hour ago and have watched 5 of them so far.

We should question fear based advice that’s recommending pills over natural food sources.

Food is medicine. So I won't be replacing no pills with food. And btw, ive eaten a 5lb bag of brazil nuts in 2 weeks and I'm fine. Now I just eat 4 a day after learning about the Selenium. But I am still ok is my point.

It’s disappointing that you are pushing supplements

Doctor I do appreciate your videos. As a so called third world citizen the West has carried this concept of nutrition by supplement versus nutrition supplied by nature to ridiculous and bizarre.
If you are acquainted with Brazil nuts as produced by Mother Nature you would know that there can be no question of over-eating. Only in the western world can this happen. Same with almonds and cashew. I know because I have grown up with these trees.

I started eating two brazil nuts a day a few weeks ago because in of one of your videos you suggested it. I read into it a bit and agreed. So why the change?
