I told my HG coach I had a breakthrough, I explained it to them and they said "this is exactly what I've been trying to teach you for weeks and now you've had the aha moment!"

As a newly licensed therapist just beginning a private practice, I very much appreciate this perspective. I watch your videos as part of my own professional development. Thank you!

As a tutor and becoming teacher: I can confirm

yes I was a small group math teacher, and I would get students from all F's to all B's and above with two methods

the first tool, is learning how to put your head down and do the work. it sucks, but you'll never pass if you don't do the work

and the second tool, is how to use the resources and skills they have to find out answers to new problems. I would give them hints first, then give them a full explanation of their tools and how it might apply to their problem, and finally if they really struggled with it, we would go back and work through it step by step, and they would get their own answer through direct instruction, and then I would have them do the next problem with half the assistance, and the third problem with no assistance unless they asked for it, and then the next questions would be all up to them and we'd compare answers at the end

If you gave people answers to their problems you would both run out of time because the number of problems in life are endless. Instead, it is better to teach others how to find answers to their own problems. Then they can learn and teach themselves.

A truly generous person not only gives treasure to others, but teaches others how to find it too. Give a man a fish and you feed him for a day. Teach a man to fish and you feed him for a lifetime.

Teaching and coaching rides the fine line between allowing people to find the solution themselves by learning the process and practice, and not forcing them to reinvent the wheel and try and learn from scratch topics that have encompassed thousands of careers of work.

I think this is half-and-half, sometimes getting the answers first is the best way to start. For example, it's useful to see an example of a good essay/report before you do your own, if you're learning algorithms you'll go much faster if you analyse the solutions first, if you're learning chess read about the patterns before making your own or prepare to be behind by a millennium. Some people do avoid "seeing the answers" and make life much harder for themselves.

I'm getting a kick because I gave a similar speech to my math class today.

Thank you. Hope my former mental health care professionals get the opportunity to watch this too.

That is actually smart. You get taught something similar then you go out and find the answers yourself without being given the answers. They guide you the process, you do it yourself.

With this in mind, how should school teach the use of tools like AI, Calculators and computers? All while enabling real understanding.
Do we need to progress via mastery instead of by passing grade?

I have a hard time when present with options because I am so apathetic. I could pick A and be fine or B and be fine, both are fine so I freeze up. I also freeze up and have difficulty because I dont feel I am worthy of my. I dont deserve any. It feels uncomfortable saying I statements "I want X" because I see it as selfish and undeserving. If its someone else, yeah totally. But when it comes to me, I couldn't care less

There are students today (can't put a number on it, but I've heard their voices) that say Artificial Intelligence tools are the way forward for education (like a new kind of calculator) and I can't help but disagree for the exact reasons specified here.
