Because when you ask people if they’re having fun, they think of the times they’ve enjoyed themselves with people they care about and by extension, felt emotionally fulfilled/validated, but that isn’t how people generally experience the internet or video games. Much like small talk, It’s a way for people to engage themselves superficially without the inherent risk of putting themselves out there (to a personalised degree) and facing possible rejection.

The concept of clickbait is just an expression, at a micro-level, of what the internet is really about. The more hours you spend on it, the more ads pages can throw at you, the more personal data they can get out of you (to sell), and so on. It's the TV formula of engaging people once again, except the internet is miles better because the content is tailored to your tastes.

The best thing one can do to start using the internet in a healthier way is to establish browsing schedules and stick to them.
