Low-Fat vs Low-Carb. And the winner is... — DR. ERIC WESTMAN
[Conversations with Dr. Westman: Episode 76]

During the era when low-fat diets reigned supreme and most medical and nutrition professionals were warning people to avoid fat (saturated fat, especially) -- two of Dr. Westman’s patients had lost a lot of weight without worrying about how much fat they were eating, but they kept their carbs very low.

This was a shock to him. These patients were doing the opposite of the prevailing advice but they were getting great results.

Find out more in our latest Conversations with Dr. Westman to hear his thoughts on low-carb versus low-fat diets.

I remember in college learning about metabolism in biochemistry class and how protein, fats, and carbs are broken down. Back then I knew that a high carb diet wasn’t the way to go. One of my final essay questions was if you were on a desert island would you rather have protein, fat or carbs and of course it was protein. I’ve been low carb for a few years now and I feel so much better and dropped excess weight. I’ll never go back. ❤️❤️❤️

Quirky and irrational is a very kind way to describe humans :) I bought your book, withing 3 days I was starting to feel different and couldn't figure out why...no low carbs no sugar equals more energy no joint pain and no meds. Thank you for being so kind and helping any who are willing to listen.

"Most doctors are not trained in evidence based medicine." Really? This seems unbelievable. Being an engineer, this is frightening. It seems to explain doctors and nutritionists animosity toward low carb diets.

Not to mention, it might explain the bipolar behavior of the medical establishment in the treatment of covid. Then there are the unethical individuals influencing, no controlling, doctor patient relationships in the use of off-label medicines, having excellent safety profiles, to treat cv19.

Truly frightening.

I met Dr Eric’s videos about 4 months ago searching Keto diets and info to reverse my diagnosis for TD2. I followed his Page 4 and have since had great success and am now cleared. Lost 14kg and feeling energetic. Love his manner and info.. would absolutely recommend. 😍

I've tried to talk to friends with serious health issues about low carb diets and they're aghast! "But I can't LIVE without bread! (or sugar, or candy or cake or pasta or chips or corn or potatoes or rice or cereal.)" End of discussion.

10 years ago my doctor told me I had a chronic incurable disease called diabetes, btw which my father had just died from. My doctor said go on a low fat diet that was the normal prescription. I went on low carb diet (which my doctor said was unsafe) and lost 50+ pound and got my A1c down to around 5.3… my newest doctor still lists me as “controlling” my diabetes by diet with no medications… and of course wants me on statins, which I keep refusing.

I so wish you could adjust the clarity on your audio, it’s muffled and echoes. Makes it hard to watch.

I don’t have an issue telling my doctor I’m on Keto and I have lost 70 lbs so they can’t deny it works. My A1c went from 6 to 5 in 6 months. My triglycerides are 79 and my HDL is 86. What my doctor is on my case about is my total cholesterol 373 and LDL is 271. Would it be better for me to gain my 70 lbs back and have the higher triglycerides, lower HDL, and higher A1c just so the total cholesterol and LDL decrease? That sounds ridiculous to me.

The funny thing I always here from people is they are eating clean, I've tried eating clean and the six meals a day low fat diet, it did nothing for me I found fasting and then low carb lifestyle, and low and behold I lost 100 pounds, I still eat low carb and lowered the fat intake upped the protein intake, still have not gained weight, actually losing weight of late, qeigh 218, eat at least 180 grams of protein from animal products, trying to cut back on the cheese and butter but they taste so good.

Why bother to do low carb when pre1970 there wasnt skyrocketing diabetes and obesity? To play it safe go 2-3 decades back to 40s50s, well starches, meats, dessert at dinner was perfectly fine and healthy Bread or potatoes or noodles at every meal, and a good portion thereof! Super low fat, super low carb never was the way we in America were eating, and people were doing great. The change has been sugar not starch and non animal fat and the weight gain. Am I wrong here?

I prefer a diet that is high in protein, low in fat, and moderate carbs.

Can we even have a discussion re importance of eating fat without some mention of EPOE4 gene and the complex metabolic challenge that is part of the EPOE4 ….

Thank you Dr. Westman ! Here is more proof FAT is GOOD for you. In the original 1611 KJV BIBLE in Genesis 45: 18 God said And ye shall EAT the FAT of the land.” 😄😄👍👍

Actually low carb, high fat diet has been around for hundreds of thousands of years. Our ancient ancestors ate this way because it was the only way to eat. We are just returning to our roots.

Even on a low fat diet, if you're losing weight then your metabolising the supposedly unhealthy saturated fat in your body (which is full of fat soluble vitamins A, D and E).

Low carb beats the low fat diet 30 to why the big food companies are still pushing low fat at "heart healthy" ....I'm moving to France lol😉

Low fat nonsense, I was talked into a surgery 20 years ago, so regretful, wish I had known about ketogenic lifestyle, low fat, low calorie, carbohydrates diets not sustainable.
