Ketogenic Diet vs. Low Carb Diet: Thomas DeLauer-

-Ketosis is when your body turns to fat rather than carbohydrates for energy. Ketosis can occur during fasting, when you reduce the amount of carbs or calories in your diet, during pregnancy or after exercising for a long period of time. Many diets use ketosis as the means of burning fat while maintaining muscle - examples include the Atkins diet and other low-carb diets. This strategy can also lead to decreased hunger. How long does it take to kick your body into fat burning, ketosis mode? Roughly 3-4 days of consuming less than 50 carbs per day, the equivalent of 2 bananas. Benefits include weight loss, seizure prevention, cardiovascular health and type-2 diabetes help, to name a few.
How does it Work? When glucose is in short supply, your liver will break down fats into ketones, which are then used throughout your body for energy. Muscles and other tissues in your body use ketones rather than glucose for energy metabolism. In a healthy person, the production of ketones for energy is the body’s natural response to starvation, so this happens when dieting, overnight and during fasting.
Glucose or Ketones: Which is More Effective? Many brain diseases, such as epilepsy, are already being treated by the ketogenic diet. The mechanisms to why it helps the brain are still being studied, but there are some possible reasons that ketones seem to be a good energy source for the brain. One major Ketone, beta-hydroxybutyrate, or BHB, provides more energy per unit of oxygen than glucose, and thus may be even more efficient than glucose at providing energy to the brain. (3)
-The ketogenic diet has also been found to increase the number of mitochondria in brain cells. In a 2004 study on rats, one group was fed a ketogenic diet while the other was fed a normal diet. A positive impact was found on the gene expression for mitochondrial enzymes in the hippocampus, the memory and learning center of the brain. (4)
Ketosis and Body Water Composition: High fat and low carb diets are known to lead to fast weight loss. The fast weight loss is due to water weight being shed (5)
-When you decrease carbs, you decrease water storage in the body.
Who Can Benefit From Ketosis? If you are looking to shed some body fat, ketosis may be a good tool. This can go along with an exercise regimen as you maintain muscle while losing fat. Ketosis can also benefit those who need to boost brain power as energy may be utilized more effectively in the brain.
*Be careful because those with diabetes can get too high of a level of ketones in their blood, which is very dangerous. This occurs due to the low levels of insulin in the blood, which will signal the body to produce excess ketones that will build up in the blood, making the blood pH too low.

In November, I was 320 lbs. Had two spine surgeries 2 and 4 months prior. Working out was barred for me by doctors. I used info from Thomas and Dr berg on keto and I am now at 195. No exercise outside my normal daily routine (my job is quite physical). And tbh, Ive lost very little muscle. 125lbs in 5 1/2 months is pretty amazing.

Thanks Thomas.

I have lost 25lbs in 2 months on Keto, weight loss has slowed to 3.5lbs per week and the closer to my natural bodyweight, the amount of weight per week should gradually decrease. I am loving the Keto diet, its easy and works.

In 2018 I weighed 240 at 5'6" I randomly saw one of Dr. bergs videos on youtube. I figured what the hell why not. By the time 2019 came around I was 163. Went and rejoined the military "Navy reserves" I had gotten out of the Marines in 2010 and didn't think I could ever get back in.
I'm a fatty at heart, daddy likes to eat. After the first 2 weeks it's easy. I mixed in intermittent fasting and eventually got down to one meal a day.
When you each so much fat you're never hungry. Hell sometimes I didn't even want to eat the next day.
It works folks. Don't cheat and stay dedicated. IT WILL WORK.

Hi, Thomas, I started on Low carb in late may this year, and up to now, I have shed 30lb without any effort to be very honest. I cannot exercise as I am waiting for a knee and hip operation, but I have to say it has been a fabulous journey eating delicious food, instead of starving on low-fat diets! I will look at keto after this video, which is great information by the way.

I avoid all carbs since a heart attack in May. I made a glycemic index chart and followed it. I lost so much weight very specifically where I thought I could never lose it! I lost 4 inches in my waist. I feel great now, because I look better than I ever did. Watching your videos has guided me away from fruit which I previously thought was essential(though I was only eating cherries and prunes at the time). I've always eaten with reckless abandon and still do. Now I just avoid carbs and try to eat within the 8 hour window.

Ketosis is not "starvation" mode. It just means you are using fat as a primary fuel source instead of carbohydrates. This was the natural metabolic state for 95% of human history until the advent of agriculture about 10, 000 years ago. Our bodies have adapted to running off glucose because our diets have become so carbohydrate rich. The body produces its own glucose when it needs to from fats. There was never any significant source of carbohydrates available to our hunter gatherer ancestors in nature. The fruits, veggies, and grains we consume today have been manipulated and bred for thousands of years to suit us. The idea that you are "starving" once glycogen stores are depleted after 24hrs of fasting is absolutely ridiculous. In ketosis, the body actually retains far more muscle mass than a restricted calorie diet and the average person has at least one month's worth of fat reserves before the body would even consider using muscle for fuel. The point where muscle is being used for fuel because fat has run out is true starvation. To rephrase, starvation is when you run out of fat, not when you run out of carbs.

I live in Austria, Europe. It is total low carb, keto (and please don´t mention carnivore!)-WASTELAND here! Thank you so much, guys (All of you who give a platform to high-quality information!)! You saved my life! Or to say it in a better way: You gave me all the information to get a high quality of life!
.
I never ever been so healthy! I never ever in my life I felt so good no matter if it is my mental condition or my physical. My whole life flipped around!
.
How? High-quality low carb, real clean keto, sometimes even phases of a carnivore (I found a farmer who hast cattle which are really grass-fed, grass-finished and beautiful!).
.
When I read your posting about sugar I just remember that I feel like walking alone in the desert of nutrition-missinformation here in Europe. Thank you so much for your work and your effort! You make some lives better, maybe even save some lives... I wanted you to know that!

Great video with clear and easily understood concepts. Success story here... Lost 30 pounds in the last two months - 2 "bullet proof" coffees a day and a moderate sized dinner, avoiding carbs, of course. That's with minimal effort, little exercise, and more energy than I ever thought I'd have again! Thanks for the great information and keep them coming.

Thank you for clearing this up.
About 15 years ago, a NEW generation was introduced to Adkins. The most recent generations always think they discovered everything. Read some old school magazines from the 70's and 80's, (Flex, Muscle Mag, etc.) you'll see tons of information on CARB restriction and its benefits.
