Who is Ron Spomer
For 44 years I’ve had the good fortune to photograph and write about my passion – the outdoor life. Wild creatures and wild places have always stirred me – from the first flushing pheasant that frightened me out of my socks in grandpa’s cornfield to the last whitetail that dismissed me with a wag of its tail. In my attempts to connect with this natural wonder, to become an integral part of our ecosystem and capture a bit of its mystery, I’ve photographed, hiked, hunted, birded, and fished across much of this planet. I've seen the beauty that everyone should see, survived adventures that everyone should experience. I may not have climbed the highest mountains, canoed the wildest rivers, caught the largest fish or shot the biggest bucks, but I’ve tried. Perhaps you have, too. And that’s the essential thing. Being out there, an active participant in our outdoor world.

I just can't envision a case would ever exist where Ron would say any 30 cal is better or even as good as any 7mm.

Guess I'm old-school and outdated. But I still run a .308, never let me down

I'd still pick my 30-06 with a 165 TTSX at 3000fps. I use it on whitetail, elk, African plains game, black bear, moose, sheep, goats, hogs, and almost anything else from 100-1500lbs. Heck, even water buffalo, nilgai and American bison are fair game out to reasonable distances. I do prefer a 340 Weatherby or 375 Ruger for the biggest bears, but if it was all I had, a 220gr partition or 240gr weldcore would work.

Sadly I am on the cusp of AARP - 54 years old - which means I acquired all my hunting rifles (.243, .25-'06, .270, 7 MM Rem Mag, .30-'06, and .300 Win Mag) before the modern advent of higher twist rate barrels for longer, higher B.C bullets. But this is hair splitting. An "old school" .270 or 7 MM Rem. Mag with a modern ELD X round will like kill any deer or elk that a 6.5 or 7 PRC will. Woukd I like a a 7 PRC? Yes please. Do I need one?? Nope.

I have a 7-30 Waters, 7mm Rem Mag, and I am getting the wife a 7mm-08 for her birthday. I reload and the 7mm PRC will use less powder for more velocity than my 7 Rem Mag and my barrel is ready for replacement. If I can find the brass I am going to make the switch.

My 300 win mag works fine for me. I can't run out and get every time a new rifle comes out

I love the 30.06 been using it for 50 years, load up or down, my favorite is the 168 grain. Just learn your rifle and the round you choose for your situation

Been saying this. My best load is the 5.5×55 Swiss. Perfect accuracy at any range I've ever had to shoot it.

All things being equal (ammo availability etc), if I was picking between the two today, I’d be going 7mm PRC for sure. Certainly wouldn’t sell a 300WM I already had, though.

It'll takes close to a decade of the 7mm prc being out for good brass avaiblity and factory load variety...win mag and 7 rem mag will still be king for yrs to come

What you've got to ask yourself today when purchasing a rifle is ammo and reloading component availability and cost. I shoot a few different .30's and haven't had trouble finding either.

I really like the 30-06 versatility with SO many projectiles, real light through heavy, with even more loadings now and in development. It can bullseye at 1000 m OR shoot through a telephone pole-powerful. The .308 is great as is the 7.62x54R, but all .30 cal. I love the flat shooting 6.5 or the little more beefy 7mm. as pointed out here. I am STILL working on getting a .270 also. I love that round. Power, flat shooting half way around the world, light recoil and they are all accurate is seems right out of the box. Actually, I like about anything that goes bang- NOT even getting into the cool air rifles now!!!
