Do we REALLY need the 7mm PRC?

Who is Ron Spomer
For 44 years, I’ve had the good fortune to photograph and write about my passion – the outdoor life. Wild creatures and wild places have always stirred me – from the first flushing pheasant that frightened me out of my socks in grandpa’s cornfield to the last whitetail that dismissed me with a wag of its tail. In my attempts to connect with this natural wonder, become an integral part of our ecosystem, and capture a bit of its mystery, I’ve photographed, hiked, hunted, birded, and fished across much of this planet. I've seen the beauty that everyone should see and survived adventures that everyone should experience. I may not have climbed the highest mountains, canoed the wildest rivers, caught the largest fish, or shot the biggest bucks, but I’ve tried. Perhaps you have, too. And that’s the essential thing. Being out there, an active participant in our outdoor world.

New cartridges sell new guns and ammo. Remember all the short magnums awhile back. People bought them up but what's left out there for OTC ammo? Go try to find a box of 243 WSSM.

Its not that I don't like new rounds, I just want to go to a store and find .30-30 or .45-70.

The 7mm prc is really the only new one I really fancy

Chuck Conners old. 270 is still the best of both worlds. Effective and easy to find

This is how we progress . Whether it’s cartridges or cars we will always strive for the next improvement . I don’t own any prc carriages but they seem to be fantastic so why not,

without a refreshing market, the trade is sure to die. let it continue to take new breath.

30-06 has the best performance ratio. Next is the WSM like 300WSM or 338WSM

My Sears Catalog 30-06 bolt gun has-been getting the job done since 1964, and will still get the job done in 2064!

More options are always good. The only concern I have is a SHTF supply issue. How many guns am I going to need in order to utilize the most prolific ammunitions out there? So far I want to stick with what has the most ammunition currently in production so that if I need to barter for ammo people will likely have it. 9mm, 45 acp, 5.56/.223, 308 win. 7.62x39mm 12 ga. 22lr. Maybe 30-06 if I can ever afford it. I mean am I wrong?

My new old ctg is the 20mm vulcan. It's got everything from close to very far covered. It's been to hot & dry to use much yet. Only fired it twice in the yard so far after wetting the area down first😊

If I remember right Ron the 7 wsm is more efficient but what do I know after 60+ years of being a hunter reloader and gun collector and coming from 6 generations of hunters and reloaders. Even the 7-08 makes more sense! Hornaday has done more to damage the hunting industry for greed then any other company about how long range hunting makes you a sniper and a man! I don’t buy anything that is destroying our hunting heritage😡 never is a man more hated then he who speaks the truth!

I run 270 308 and 300win mag for big game. All 3 ammo available everywhere

Lol 😂 to me the only thing stopping me from getting all the new and old cartridges is not having enough money to buy it 🤣🤣🤣

Don’t forget the now almost obsolete 7mm WSM. Ballistics are equal to the REM 7 mag as well as the 7 prc. Hopefully the 7 prc won’t go the way of the wsm. 7 mag still king and still around

The 7 PRC is kinda redundant. Outside of its beltless case I’ve seen hand loaded 7 rem mag shoot the same bullets at the same or faster speeds. And they’re making barrels with that fast 1:8 twist for the 7 mag now. The xbolt line has a few and the Remington 700 ADL in 7 mag has a 1:8 twist. It’ll do everything the 7 PRC can do but arguably better because it has a higher case capacity.

The problem with them developing new cartridges is that takes away materials that could have gone towards the old cartridges. Manufactures are having a hard enough time getting out standard cartridge brass and other reloading components, that it does not make sense to mess around with developing another cartridge. Get ammo out on the shelves and prices down. That is more important than messing around with a new cartridge.

I love your opening statement!!! I don’t understand why anyone cares what others are doing with their gun choices. I do what I want, and think what others do is awesome… even if I think they’re crazy!

I use a Mossberg patriot 7 PRC recoil is less than a 243 same power as the 7 mag IMO better ballistics also this PRC makes 500 yard shots easy for anyone

"Poor old" 7x57 still shows the young whippersnappers how it's done. 😉

if you dont shoot bigger than elk and already have a great calibre probably not. if starting the game possibly this or a 6.8 western maybe. or the smaller PRC and enjoy without the big magnum recoil.
