Who is Ron Spomer
For 44 years I’ve had the good fortune to photograph and write about my passion – the outdoor life. Wild creatures and wild places have always stirred me – from the first flushing pheasant that frightened me out of my socks in grandpa’s cornfield to the last whitetail that dismissed me with a wag of its tail. In my attempts to connect with this natural wonder, to become an integral part of our ecosystem and capture a bit of its mystery, I’ve photographed, hiked, hunted, birded, and fished across much of this planet. I've seen the beauty that everyone should see, survived adventures that everyone should experience. I may not have climbed the highest mountains, canoed the wildest rivers, caught the largest fish or shot the biggest bucks, but I’ve tried. Perhaps you have, too. And that’s the essential thing. Being out there, an active participant in our outdoor world.

I was working the counter at a popular gun store when a guy comes in with a "problematic" bolt action rifle. He said he bought it a few days prior and took it to the range for the first time the previous day. Well, something didn’t go right at the range. Immediately I see the floorplate is missing. I examined the rifle, a Weatherby chambered in 270 Weatherby Magnum. His ammo? 270 Winchester.

He very strongly believed Weatherby should repair his rifle for free because it wasn't made clearer to him that his rifle was 270 Weatherby Magnum and not 270 Winchester. I told him he was free to try but what else can be expected of any manufacturer when the cartridge for which the firearm is chambered is engraved into the barrel and printed on the box? It is the responsibility of the shooter to be certain the ammunition they have is the correct ammunition for the firearm in their hand.

I knew rhis from first hand experience! My first rifle ever was bought at Wal-Mart. A .300 Weatherby Magnum Vangaurd. I was 18, didn't know a darn thing about guns. Just pointed to a random bolt action in the case & told them I wanted that one! Anyway, a future trip I decided to buy ammo.

Told the guy at the counter I wanted 2 boxes of .300 Weatherby Magnum ammo. The guy at the counter sold me a box of Weatherby and a box of Winchester Magnum. I didn't catch the mistake until I had fired nearly the entire box of Winchester Magnum ammo. Just figured they would hand me what I asked for...

That's how I learned that you can't trust the person behind the gun counter to know anything about guns or ammunition. Especially at a big box store. Always double check, never assume you're getting what you asked for.

Reminds me of the time I had to explain to a guy at an outdoor range that .45LC and .45ACP are entirely different cartridges… he had been attempting to shoot his Henry lever action with little success until I asked if he needed help.

I know a guy in 1962 was training the royal Laotian army snipers. The gun gove to use was unmarked and the ammo was nothing he even seen. He kept a few rounds of the unmarked ammo and a few years later he saw the .300 Winchester Mag in sporting goods store . He took a round to compare and what the army was using was the .300 WM.

You see those all over the ground at every range. Always worth a good chuckle.

That was instantly my thought. That short shoulder tells the story.

I had 5 25-06 rifles at one time, and a mate of mine had a 30-06, we were at the range and instead of a loud crack from his gun, it sounded very quiet, it still went bang, and he said it had no recoil, laughing, I told him he had grabbed MY ammo and shot a 25-06 in his 30-06. I knew what had happened as soon as I heard it. Sheepishly, he moved to another bench and took ALL OF HIS AMMO WITH HIM. We still laugh about this!

Thanks for the info. I've never had the pleasure of shooting one. Would have never thought there was a difference.

I found some of those while collecting brass, I've got a can of shells fired in the wrong guns, like 308 fired in a 30-06, 17hmr in a 22mag, even 7mm mag in 300 win mag. And more😊

I just got through mounting my scope back on my Savage Axis 22-250 that I got back from Savage today. I made the mistake of firing a 6.5Grendel through it. Even though it was totally my fault and I admitted my mistake they disassembled the firearm cleaned it made repairs and test fired it. All for warranty/ no extra charge. I’m so impressed with Savage that I believe I’m going to a store tomorrow and ordering a 110 Tactical in 300 Win Mag. Maybe I’ll go and sight in the 22-250 first but I’m very impressed with the service.

Number 1 reason to keep your brain engaged at all times. The words "almost" and "close enough" don't apply.

A friend of mine called me years ago because his new 300 win mag couldn't get better than about a 5" group at 100 yds and the cases were splitting, sure enough it was a 300 wby and after getting the right ammo I pulled its groups down to ¾"

saw a 7.62x51 in a Garand M-1 plug conversion. The Navy wanted to convert their M-1's. The way they tried to interference fit a plug to take up the half inch they cut off the 30-06. If you can get an extraction with the plug and casa. The next rd will feed and fire in a 30-06 chamber.
