I had this exact problem and fixed it by accident using this exact technique. (Was using resistance bands to stretch)

What helped me was to lighten the load and focus on the decent focusing on loading the quads driving through to the foot focus on control. On the accent drive focus on pushing from your feet and shifting to your quads( youll feel it) pause half way and push through.

This helped alot with my form .

yes..im working since like a year on foot it slowly puts my entire body back into much better symmetry from the ankles, knee, hips to the neck even the face, eradicating much of the pain/inflamation in the process...it is a gamechanger for me w 2 spine surgerys... i jump on the bike & knock out 30 km like nothing, get off do pushups crunches planks without pain & exhaustion from the asymmetry like a year ago...matter of fact all my ankle knee back neck problems started when i didnt take care of a festered big toe like a idiot

I lost balance a couple of times 2 days ago and on the last set I regained it. Easy to make a mistake like this with lower load than you are used to. I’ll remember

I often push too far on the balls of my feet when going up. i think im gonna do this.. but put the bands under my heels.

If I don’t have a friend to hold the band, can’t I just focus on keeping pressure on the outside of the foot (with the big toe still firmly planted on the floor)?

This happens a lot when people squat with too much weight/load. Lighten the weight and do the mechanics correctly.
