*🕷️ Listen to your Spidey Senses!*

Loyal Theorists, our Spidey-Senses tingled when we saw that Sony dropped a new Spider-Verse short film called “The Spider Within.” But then our Theorist-Senses started tingling, and we wondered… just _what_ is up with Spider-Man’s Spider-Sense? It’s been different for the Tobey Maguire, Andrew Garfield, and Tom Holland versions of Peter Parker. And now the same is true for Miles Morales. Join us to find out what’s really causing Miles’ senses to tingle and how we can best handle them so he doesn’t end up being his own worst enemy (yes, even worse than the Green Goblin).

One of Matt’s last theories was how there’s no good role models in media anymore or that they’re being erased/mocked. It was good seeing miles confide in a father figure who’s actually his father. It’s hard enough finding good father figures let alone good fathers and this short just lets a dad be a dad. So good

This reminds me of that one episode from the Teen titans(the original, not TTGO) animated series where Robin was fighting Slade but he is literally the only one who sees Slade. None of his friends could see Slade.

When Robin finally calm down with the help of his friends. "Slade" finally vanishes. There was no Slade to begin with. It was all in his mind. Hallucinations due to mental stress and PTSD.

The episode ended with Robin turning off the lights to double check if Slade is still there. There was no Slade at all.

That was a very dark episode for me when I was a kid. Back then, I didnt even know what mental health is and how realistic that experience is irl.

I deal with anxiety, and I've dealt with panic attacks on a semi-regular basis. Therapy has helped so much with giving me the tools to manage my anxiety. This short really connected with me because of this, and this episode did a great job exploring that territory. I hope, if anyone watches this video and it resonates with them, that it helps them realize they're not alone, and that they can overcome anxiety. It's a lot of work, and I personally still have road ahead of me, but it's a lot more manageable already. Thanks for shining a spotlight on this issue.

So excited for Miles to say in Beyond, "I guess the real anomaly was the Miles we made along the way."

Fun fact: In the comics, Peter Parker's Spider-Man talks to a therapist, and his problems are so great, they sent his therapist to therapy! That's why there's a Spider-Therapist, cuz only a Spider-Person can understand and handle all that

From a psych and mental health nerd: A++ intro to anxiety disorders, panic attacks and CBT! Calling out the disclaimer about panic attacks not being inherently fatal before going into theory mode was so necessary and so well done, especially proud to be a Theorist today. Thanks, Lee!

I always took them recognizing someone else's spider-sense in the movie as like crossing frequencies of a radio, which is why when Miles meets his Peter, it looks like they get a bit of a headache, the interference of two strong reaction signals pushing against each other.

It's interesting to see how the Spider-Verse weaves in aspects of mental health alongside traditional superhero narratives. This in-depth interpretation is impressive. It drives home the fact that superheroes, despite their superpowers, also experience human emotions and struggle with problems like everyday people.

These were the kind of theories that I was really scared of loosing when Mat left. The ones that start out talking about the media we all love and then, go into real world things and really help remind me and ground me in the world. That short made me cry when I first saw it. These depictions of these disorders are getting better, more accurate and are helping with acceptance and normalization of really difficult things. Thank you Lee, this was a wonderful video 😊

Something I would like to add, Miles in the comics had similar problems with anxiety to the point that his Spidersense would randomly go off without there being any threat or just not work at all, when it mattered. He did get help and actual therapy later on to help him deal with it.

I can only recommend Ziglar's current run with Miles. It's really amazing and great for his character.

As someone who also suffers from a anxiety disorder, I felt really connected to Miles. I experience some of these symptoms often and it felt nice that the film theorists covered something that I, along with many others, struggle with. And the way they talked about anxiety disorders was really informative and understanding.

This is probably one of my favorite theories now.

Was not expecting to end up crying about my anxiety when I hopped into this video a few days late. Thanks Lee, I’m not able to treat myself atm, but I didn’t know about this short, and seeing it played completely straight, hearing you talk about it as it is, very comforting, and helpful

I think the reason Insomniac Miles (IM) gets a pass while Sony Miles (SM) doesn't is because the spider that bit IM was from his universe, unlike the one that bit SM. In SM's universe, the blonde Peter was supposed to be the only Spider-Man in that world, while in the Insomniac-verse, there was meant to be both a Peter Parker and Miles Morales Spider-Man in that world. More than one Spider-Man can exist in a single universe (otherwise characters like Silk don't align with the canon), it's just that that wasn't meant to be the case in SM's universe.

I think my favorite part of this video is how it shows how much thought and effort went into making the Spider Within short. It is such an accurate depiction of panic attacks in a visual way that is also on brand for the character, so it's excellently done.

I had a huge panic attack a year ago followed by much smaller ones, but the first was out of nowhere and it was the most scary thing I've ever lived thru; I was literally talking and playing with a board game with my friends when I suddenly had all the symptoms that they mentioned on the episode, specially the whole body tingle. I did as best as I could to stay calm and relax but it was impossible, my mind was struggling to focus on anything but "staying alive", I felt my breathing starting to shorten until I gave in and went to the hospital a few minutes later without anyone knowing. The doctors after calming me and relaxing me with both medicine and chat, just ruled out I had a panic attack with no real evident cause so I had to go to a psychiatrist to check me and actually rule out something, I ended going and not really sorting what really caused it, it seemed to be a mix of a bad sleep schedule and lack of exercise (After coming back from a month-long trip that made me walk about 20k steps a day, it seemed my mind made me think I had stored excess energy that I wasn't burning it made me feel like I needed to release it, apparently) made both me and my body crash down hard when the stress built up, luckily I tackled it as early as I could and nothing bad came out and it took me some months to fully recover from it.

In the end this episode was almost word-by-word what happened to me, to the point it was a bit funny to see my experience being described in this episode and made me want to write this comment, just to share all of this, hopefully this also helps someone or gives a better perspective on what the episode was about!

"YoU'rE aN aNoMaLy."
Miles: Dude, you know what would happen if a person actually got bit by a radioactive spider? Radiation poisoning bruh, we're all anomalies.

The spider Within really does a fantastic job showing anxiety in a realistic way, I understood the allegory immediately and related to it as someone with anxiety (generalized) Lee I appreciate you for bringing attention to anxiety disorders and the team for researching seriously, I learned some new things myself

Go for a run, even if you hate running. The anxiety goes away completely.

8:31 As a person with sleep paralysis, I can ABSOLUTELY confirm that Miles is suffering from sleep paralysis demons. My demons usually get close and touch me, and I can’t do a thing about it. The scary thing about it is that it feels real, it feels like there’s actually somebody there with me.

This short film really sheds light on what having an Anxiety disorder and, more specifically, when having a panic attack is really like, speaking from experience daily.
It also shows what one can do to help remedy and manage through, even though to most, it may seem like the worst idea to ask for help, again speaking from experience.

Really great theory!
