Why are all superhero costumes SO basic? Superman, Flash, Wonder Woman… they’re just so BORING with one or two colors each. But is there a reason for that? Actually, yes!

I’d argue that the primary colors are what makes them pop more

My man made a style theory channel, and then went “Nah post the fashion video to film theory”

The Watchmen used secondary colours, it really helped with the tonal shift those heroes provide

It's like designing a coat of arms or a logo. It has to be relatively simple, unique, memorable and instantly recognizable.

Spider-Man's outfit is way too iconic to be "upgraded". It symbolizes Spider-Man and when you look at it, it reminds you of an inspiring superhero.

It may be old, but it’s too iconic to upgrade

The primary colors are what make Spider-Man's suit iconic and nostalgic. It's too iconic to upgrade.

If it's not broken, doesn't need fixing, and the issue boils down to heavy subjectivity, don't fix it.

I think it also makes them easier for kids to get attached to them. I remember drawing Superman at like 3 years old cuz it was easy to remember what he looks like

I have to disagree here. Those bright colors may be "basic" but it's also what drew kids to the superheroes (something modern superhero creators need to remember). It makes them look more heroic, like they'll be there to help you and they're your friend while being the villain's foe. It's more hopeful. I'd rather not see them lose that even though modern printing allows for a bit more nuance in those colors and that could be integrated. They're iconic designs for a reason.

Personally, I'd say Spidey doesn't need an upgrade. He has the best suit and design out of all the superheroes, no need to improve upon perfection!

It definitely also follows the need for your characters to be instantly recognizable. If you saw a green pixel on top of a purple pixel and someone asked “who is this character?” you would know it’s Hulk Edit: or Green Goblin yes

Honestly the primary colors is what makes spider-mans og suit so iconic/nostalgic

Also something to note, a lot of super hero comic characters are specifically primary colors, red/blue/yellow and a lot of villains are secondary colors, green/orange/purple in part because of color association and because of color opposites. That’s what I learned in my comic book class anyway

The reason for Hulk being green always will be funny to me
