Do we know how to argue anymore? Our inability to listen and communicate with each other in a compassionate way has contributed to the loss of shared purpose. In this University of Oregon original documentary, THE LOST ART OF ARGUMENT, an ensemble of professors, teachers, and students present a "masterclass" on how and why to argue. Understand the power of counter-argument, embodiment and metaphors, framing, and values in argument.

Chapters:

00:00 Opening scene
02:28 Counter-argument
07:53 Argument on social media (very risky)
11:21 Embodiment and metaphors we live by
17:08 Framing
20:52 Values

The University of Oregon is first and foremost a community built on enlightenment principles and respect for others. THE LOST ART OF ARGUMENT discovers how those principles work to strengthen and protect individual thought, personal growth, and the health of the community. Argument among friends, family, and community strengthen the bonds of society. The concepts brought forth in this documentary are not only a way to approach decisions and ideas but also how to better and change ourselves.

I think the video failed to address the most important question: What is truth? It offered my truth vs. your truth. I believe the definition is objective reality. Acceptable arguments have become a sharing of my truth in exchange for hearing your truth.

I distain arguments and prefer _reasoning_ with people, which requires calm usage of logic and conclusions based on evidence. I forget who said it first but it roughly goes~ "Nobody _"wins"_ an argument! The winner is an ass and the loser is... a loser."

I am a big fan in the ethics of argument.

Rules and regulations of arguing.

Acknowledging the diverse approaches an argument can take. Being able to label these approaches like a sport or etiquette.

There is for instance the noble long winded arguer, and then there is the sneaky low blow big blaster arguer.

All the same
I love this documentary’s whole energy, attitude and positive consideration. All the ppl in this documentary were great.

The documentary was fabulous.

Hmm just randomly
Reflecting from this doco I write (on spur of the moment)
Argument is emotional and physical and fuelled with an intellectual energy which fires ppl up, gets them standing, and motivates to position perspective boldly within the frame

We haven't lost the art of argument at all if anything we have continued to expand the base of argument.

What we have lost is the art of debate, public discourse, and the ability to be confronted about views we hold with criticism. We have morphed into a culture where mob mentality rules the narrative of everyone around them.

the problem I have with arguments is people keep interrupting me and I know I am right.

Khabib wasn't stoic. And you attach him to stoicism. Rather he was deeply attached to Islam. And Islam is all about rigorous discipline - mental, spiritual, physical, to detach from materialism...

Eww twitter is the world wide broadcast of everything you read on the bathroom stalls of truck stops. They are the quotations encircling the glory holes carved out on either side of you.

Arguments are never productive they're nothing more than two differing view points set in their ways not trying to compromise with each other but to sway the minds of those who are listening to two village idiots battle it out where somehow even insults and character attacks have become socially acceptable.

1/ Ask If they like Trump
2/ Call them names (i.e. Fascist, Colonizers, Racist, Trasmognifier, Hitler, etc.) Until they admit you're right
