Eating insects can be a part of the solution to our planet’s growing food and climate crises.

Throughout our history, humans around the world have consumed these protein and nutrient-rich creatures. This hasn't been widely adopted as part of modern Western diets, however things may be changing.

A growing number of consumers in the West are now embracing entomophagy, or insect-eating.

The year is 2050. Hungry from my shift as a bias retraining instructor, I grab some sustenance at the next vending machine. I pay with the chip in the back of my left hand. The Nutribrick™ makes my throat itch slightly, because I'm a little allergic to the added mealworm, but it's still better than the cricket based products which give me diarrhea or worse.. I avoid anything that makes me gassy, since the police use dogs to detect the source of any flatulence that gets reported through the hate crime app. Since dogs are so dangerous and threatening, only the police are allowed to have them, nowadays.

organisms that can affect their safety as food.

Insects represent the largest group of animals on earth in terms of biodiversity, with an estimated 5.5 million different species.
This diversity is reflected in a matching range of infecting viruses, which not only positively or negatively affect insect populations, but can also have a major impact on human well-being. Insects have been shown to contain a wide variety of viruses up to *indicate insects as major reservoirs and vectors of viruses* and recent papers reveal an enormous diversity in RNA viruses detected in insect viruses.
