PREVENT TEARING WHILE PUSHING | 5 BEST PRACTICES

You can PREVENT TEARING DURING LABOR and you can start these things during pregnancy as well as do them while in labour and giving birth. Having a baby requires muscles and tissues to stretch and expand. The good news is, your body is built to do this very well! When there is an awareness between the mind and pelvic floor, when women aren’t told how to push during labor, and they are allowed to wait till they experience the fetal ejection reflex, their bodies are going to be more primed for a labor and delivery that does not result in vaginal tearing. Bonus if you don’t use an epidural and can have an unmedicated birth.

If tearing occurs, your body was built to heal too, mama! Check out my favorite postpartum vaginal care products below:

Thank you so much for this video! I just finished your built to birth course and my mindset towards birth has completely changed. Now at 35 weeks pregnant, I feel excited and confident about the day I get to meet my daughter at a birth center. Thank you so much Bridget! What you do is truly a gift from God for all nervous mothers out there. God bless you and your family. 🥰

Just wanted to let you know Bridget and everyone else here, I gave birth to my first without any medication in a water birth and I did everything she said. I went with my body's natural urges, I didn't push during crowning I simply took deep controlled breaths allowing my perineum to stretch. I birthed on all fours but after his head popped out I brought my leg forward into a lunge position for the next contraction then my bub popped right on out into my arms. I didn't tear at all. Was the best experience of my life. I'm currently pregnant with my second and hope and pray everything goes just as well as my first 🙌

Just to normalize, you can do all the right things and still tear, and it's okay. I did stretching, massage, saw a pf physio for months, had a home water birth on all fours, and my babys head was 38cm and had a nuchal hand and turns out my hymen was still entact, and I had a 4th degree tear. I did eventually have to really, really push her out because there was just a hell of a lot of baby and forehead and hand in there! And you know what? It was okay. The first two weeks really sucked but I got through it, and I feel content knowing I did my best. Still going to do things the same way for my next baby

Just want to say I gave birth this past June to my first baby, naturally with no epidural, and I didn't tear 😇 I watched your videos religiously, especially during my third trimester and found them so so helpful, thanks a ton and congratulations on your pregnancy!

I had 3 babies without tearing with either of them. And they were actually quite big (8.8 to 9.9 lbs), so I was very surprised. With baby no 2 I had shoulder dystocia and he was still born after one push (4 min total). What I think helped with me was the fact that I didn't feel the urge to push with my first and last baby, so I was able to listen to my body and let everything stretch more while pushing. With my second I think it helped that I spent a few hours in a warm bath. I gave birth laying on a bed all 3 times, because I had contractions in my legs and so I wasn't able to stand in the end. I am very grateful, because I felt like myself pretty quick and I was able to focus more on the baby and breastfeeding instead of my pain and healing.

I feel like it’s important to note that induced labour is often so much more intense, and after a shot of pictocin or another synthetic oxytocin they may really need the epidural. The pains at that point are not equal to the pain in a natural physiological birth x

I watched you my entire first pregnancy and I'm back for my second! Thanks to you, I was confident enough to advocate for myself and birthed in a squat position. I did have a small tear, but nothing crazy and healed quickly. You're doing God's work for all of us mothers out here and i just love you for it!

Prevent tearing

1. Connect with your plevis mind body connection. Feel your pelvic floor.
Strengthen it .

Your uterus pushes baby out. Not ur pelvic.
Make pelvic strong to help uterus.

2. Dont take the epidural

1st time momma chance of epidural and tearing is high but not impossible.

DO NOT PUSH ON YOUR BACK.

When you push without epidural u can feel ur body urges etc. This can also prevent tearing.

3. Push with your body urges.

Called the fetal ejection reflex. This is when u want to start pushing . This can happen after 10 cm dilating. Sometimes this dilating might not trigger the reflex though because the baby isnt down enough so wait for the reflex.

If u take epidural, after ur 10cm, do labouring down. This is when u waot for baby to go more down after the 10cm.

4. Birth off ur back. This closes off the pelvic outlet which is the spwce baby needs to be born. Means u need to push even harder !

5. Dont purple push. Midiwves tell u to push as much as possible holding ur breath. This puts too much lressure on the tissue of the vagina. So be in a upright position. Dont take epidural. Listen to body natural urges.

Quick breaths . And small vocalisations. This helps body do the work.

Thank you so much for this. I had my first in January of 2022 and my 2nd is due August 2023. I had a hospital birth and gave birth completely flat on my back with my legs in the air and got a 2nd degree tear AND an episiotomy 😢. I'm going for a birth center with a midwife this time and doing water birth! I'm scared but excited too for a different experience. This video was extremely helpful thank you.

Congrats on number 3!! I’m very nervous about tearing. My mom had a 4th degree tear with me, and has had problems because of it even at 63. My baby is measuring big, 5lb 4oz at 32w5d. I know the ultrasounds can be very off, but referencing it to my anatomy scan it seems to be a trend of her being big, so I’m more inclined to believe it. 😭 I’m worried about tearing but at the same time I don’t want the doctors to try to use her size as an excuse to induce me or c section.

I just gave birth to my second. I managed to not tear with either of them. My first I was on my back (not lying down) but definitely pushing. My second I needed an induction (medical reasons) and I was in an upright kneeling position I definitely had the fetal ejection reflex and it was crazy but amazing! Also birthing upright is a total game changer!

My first birth was without epidural (because it was too late for it 😬) and i didnt tear at all. Which was amazing! I prayed throughout my pregnancy and did my perineum massages throughtout my 3rd trimester. Im about to go for number 2 in 4 weeks, and i wanna try the 6 week course this time to see if it changes anything positively:)

Besides epidural, what do u think about other painkillers (opiods), like petadine?

I had a second degree tear and it was honestly no biggie. Didnt feel it tear and the worst part about the stitching was just having someone touch down there after 17.5 hours of labor lol

Just gave birth to my first naturally less than a month ago. 4th degree tear - her hand was up next to her head 😢 Wish I had watched this earlier! Will have to save for -hopefully- next time 🥲

As a pelvic floor physio specialized in maternity care, I loved this video Bridget! Thank you for bringing awareness about the pelvic floor and especially tightness. I think one tip that has helped my clients feeling the release of their pelvic floor during pregnancy is to sit on a rolled towel so they can feel the difference between the contraction and the release (on the contraction it should feel like the perineum lifts off from the towel, and on the release it comes back down). Anyhow just thought I would share this little tip! Thanks for the wonderful video!
