As a midwife, i can assure you this is not a proven fact- but if it works for her- great!
Every birth is different- please research in your individual cases and follow the instructions of the medical professionals.

Funny my doctor kept telling me to hold my breath and push and even when i tried i naturally kept breathing out. She was not happy but i pushed her out in 30 min and didnt tear so id say very successful. And i was on my back (because of the wonderful epidural) but i did perineal massages every other day from 34 weeks and the dr said i was “stretchy”… so olive oil and perineal massages are recommended!

There is no formula. Every birth is different, and it caught me by surprise each time. Just know it will he hard. You will get through it. Don't fear. It will come to pass. There's no magic formula to change what will be.

Tell that to the midwives who keep telling people to hold your breath while screaming at you to push like it's some sort of football game.

Held my breath and kept my mouth shut when pushing and baby came out just fine without tearing. Just do what you feel comfortable with.

That's crazy! The baby for the most of us doesn't come out quick period and my 8 pound baby needed me to hold my breath and push with all my mother force to near death to get my baby out! It took 3 days of labor and pushing near death to birth my daughter! She came out slow and i had over 300 stitches! You have to be that of the very few women that have that cinema perfect birth for this to even be safe to do when you give birth.

I think we are all thinking too much about this. Granted my obgyn didn't tell me anything. When my foot broke at 7 months he refused to xray because: it is a part of pregnancy. Me: if it was a part of pregnancy, wouldn't both feet be swelling? Not being properly treated for the broken foot set off a whole damn chain of events that destroyed my health. 3 yrs later: health still destroyed

Yeah and everyone's story is so different i tore with my first when i pushed when the midwife said push. I should have just relaxed and let my skin stretch longer while my uterus pushed for me. This is what i did for my 2nd and i relaxed with all my will, while repeatedly low humming 'mmmm-hmmmm' and no pushing just let my body do what it does. no tear! Actually felt fine to walk around right away. With my first i felt like i was hit by a truck and couldnt walk for days.

Every woman is different and every birth is different. By my two kids I pushed hard. First one came out after 20 minutes of pushing and I did tear. the second one. Was there in 2 minutes.. I got one push contraction and that was it he was out. So no time to stretch none of it. And guess what.. I didn’t tear a bit!! So you can’t tell!

I tarred both times. I tend to have big babies. The first one it took maybe like 6 pushes and she was out with my second I pushed like 3 times and he was out.
