Video recording of Digital Ship webinar hosted on May 11, 2021
Sponsored by Fraunhofer CML.

This webinar is exploring better ways to plan maintenance work complying with rest hours.

Stewart Bankier, Head of Fleet Personnel Development & Compliance with BSM is working to optimise the performance of teams, empowering the people to succeed. He’s also engaged in digital technology development, offering ideas, concepts and roadmaps to modernise and improve systems and organisations. He shares shipping company’s perspective why it’s hard to comply with rest hours on board in such tasks as maintenance planning.

Raphael Baumler Professor, Head of Maritime Safety and Environmental Administration at World Maritime University, talks about what WMU calls the "culture of adjustment" - where it has become common practise in some shipping companies to adjust records of work hours in order to comply with regulations. The seafarer has worked more hours than they are allowed to, but this is not shown in the report.

Anisa Rizvanolli of Fraunhofer CML talks about using improved digital technology for maintenance planning, as Fraunhofer has been doing, together with BSM Ship Management, Columbia Ship Management and Carnival Cruise Lines.

It is possible to use digital tools, properly set up, to help achieve both goals - all maintenance tasks done on time, and all rest hours regulations complied with.
