Well then this is why one needs to do the recommended service intervals and avoid dirty fluid to begin with.

Just got the trans fluid changed in my 18 Nissan Rogue at 33k miles. The guy at the dealer service counter asked why I was getting it done so early as the recommended mileage is 60k. I said given the history of Nissan CVT’s, I feel more comfortable doing it every 30k. I talked to the mechanic who did it when it was done. I asked how the fluid looked. He said it was time to be changed. Felt better about getting it done.

I tend to believe if the transmission slips after a fluid change you was probably on borrowed time anyway.

I bought a 1999 Ford Explorer Eddie Bauer edition with a 5.0 V8 about 6 years ago with 100k+ miles. After a few months the transmission didn't feel right. I bought a new filter and fluid. I dropped the pan and drained the torque converter. The pan still had tge 'Mr. Potato Head eye'(plastic plug) still in the pan. The magnet had a lot of metal sludge. I got everything clean and back together with new fluid. The transmission shifted perfectly. About 40k miles later, I did another service and the fluid looked good and the pan was clean.

I had a high mileage 1988 ford van. The transmission started slipping. I changed the fluid and found a good size piece of metal in the pan. After I refilled with new fluid it ran great.

Changing fluid won't remove suspended clutch material from the actual clutches. That what a flush would do. Feel free to change your transmission fluid, just don't flush it.

I believe he meant FLUSHING an automatic tranny on an old vehicle. Flushing it can indeed cause issues but simply CHANGING the fuid will not hurt anything. In fact, you better change fluid and filter at regular intervals or the tranny will get damaged anyway.

Unless you have a Jatco CVT then it makes no difference because it's going to fail on you no matter what you do.

My 1995 Ford Contour with notoriously weak auto transmission has had regular fluid change and still shifts OK at 179, 000 miles.

As my dear beloved father in law used to say, “if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it”. But if it’s old, c’mon and do an upgrade. Like putting new soles on old leather..

Changing the fluid in my 02 GMC with 200k after I bought it helped smooth out a jerky shift. I changed the filter also.

That's an old myth, my 79 Corvette was slipping a little, I changed ATF, filter and oil pan(rust) it runs like new it's been 4 years still no issues.

Rule of thumb. Don’t throw away the old oil you captured. If the tranny slips put back the old oil.

that's crazy, why not throw a handfull of dirt down the dipstick hole and make it work even better

If it ain’t broke don’t fix it, until the transmission fluid is so old that it starts actually breaking your transmission

Just something i noticed, everyone avoids transmissions like pandoras box. They change oil on time, flush coolant. But, simply changing the transmission fluid... Can make the car last to 250k+. Either the engine or transmission goes first. Or rust takes a car out. Take care of them... And you'll never have a issue.

This happened to me last week after I had my fluids changed. It scared the living hell out of me when it slipped. Thank God it’s fine now, but now I know. You’re a godsend Scotty. 💯

Nobody ever thinks about the fluid that need to be changed in a vehicle. it’s very simple fluid and filters. This would save you a lot of headache if you change them out regularly.
