I think this goes much deeper and is a psychological effect similar to parcopresis and paruresis. Humans have evolved to keep feces away from the areas where we reside, and so many people feel discomfort as a result of defecating or urinating in a non-designated location.

OMG I thought this was only me.
It's not even travel. It's whenever I'm in a new area. If it has been more than a day, I still poop, but it's less frequently and it doesn't feel the same. Instead of the normal urge to poop, I feel like I'm getting bloated.

Yea, I don't really need to travel for that issue. If I change anything at all in my routine or even stay a couple days at a nearby friend's house....it's like eating a pound of cheese. You're welcome, everyone.

I’ve experienced this phenomenon. It sucks. When I was younger and less observant, I wasn’t as careful about my diet while traveling abroad, even if my excursions were hardly sedentary. Now I pay much more attention to nutritional balance, and my family tends to do A LOT of walking while vacationing. Funny side note, I think I could make a review video for all the Disney park restrooms in Anaheim and Orlando. Dead serious, I’ve visited them all. 😜

I think the biggest contribution to travelers constipation for me personally is my anxiety over pooping anywhere other than my own house 😂

My first night in Paris made sure that wasn't a problem. The food at a restaurant near my hotel, facing Eiffel Tower, just flushed out my entire system, for three days. Three days wasted on a toilet in France. Got very little time to see the actual city and Versailles. The week after in Italy was just fine though.

This happened to me once when I went down to camp on the beach. Which is in the same time zone. No jet lag or anything. I didn't even change my eating habits all that much. But I didn't drop a Duke for about four or five days. But when I finally did, it was the best. I wish I could relive that moment day after day.
