I've experienced this, myself. When I remember to stay "in the hips" in the bottom half of the squat I tend to have less knee pain from it and I feel stronger all the way up from the bottom position.

Bullshit... you can train your knees past your toes and be fine. It's about proper progression and maybe including stretching into your weekly routine
