How to Make Cathedral Windows Quilt Block - Multiple Techniques and Variations - Quilting Tutorial

Today we’re making the Cathedral Windows quilt block. This is one of those blocks that looks more complicated than it really is. Paulette shows you how easy it is! No pattern needed, in our examples we started with 4 inch squares, to end up with a 7-1/2 block (7 inches in your finished project). These techniques work in any size, and feel free to experiment with your scraps, to see what combinations of sizes you like!

Paulette was pretty excited that she figured out how to add text on top of the video! In her words, “You really CAN teach an old dog new tricks!” 😄 She said, if she can learn to do that, you can learn to make this block. Give it a try!

Thanks for watching!

Mother made a full sized Cathedral Window quilt years ago. It was so heavy that no one ever slept under it. It was hand made and beautiful. I have no idea who got that quilt after Mom died. I love that last pattern you showed us. It reminded me of the Log Cabin with a Cathedral window in the center. It is beautiful. Thank you for this video.

Thank you for taking the time to make this tutorial. You made this look like something I will be able to make, instead of just wishing I could.

Love the approach and method, especially sewing those curves before all the blocks are assembled. It’s much easier to deal with detail sewing on a small piece! I think the last method is my favorite 😊 Thank you!!

My husbands mother made a BEAUTIFUL cathedral window quilt.
She sewed the folded pieces all by hand.
Her quitting was absolutely amazing.

My grandmother made a bedspread in the cathedral window pattern for my parents' 1-year wedding anniversary. Wishful thinking! It ended up taking ten years and I remember watching her working on it. She added an additional step to one of your variations: the backing material was all white, so to add color, she sewed a little square into the little square window. I now have a much better understanding of the work that went into that quilt! And plan to try your variations myself.

I can’t decide which one is my favorite technique! But I’m leaning towards the last method! Thank you for sharing!
