Thank you for this tutorial. I have been wanting to do a small cathedral window wall piece or small throw but was a little intimidated. Your explanation and demonstration were very easy to follow. I think I will give it a try.

I have always wondered how it was done. I have been enjoying hand sewing with English Paper Piecing, and was looking to expand to another type of hand sewing. This is intriguing, I had not realized the traditional style was this double layer open effect. You did such a great job explaining it and demonstrating it I will try this first with a cushion cover and see how it goes.

As you say it is a good way to use up scraps with the muslin background.

I do have a question though, if I wanted to add batting to it for warmth and more texture, how would I quilt it? Would it need to be hand quilted? Tied? Where would the quilting be done. In between the windows so you don’t stitch down the windows and create a flat surface instead of the 3-D effect? Curious about that.
