What Causes Nasal Congestion?

What causes nasal congestion? Let's talk about it. Inside your nose, there's a couple structures you need to know about. The first is called your septum. It divides your nose into a right and left nasal cavity, but the other structure is called your nasal turbinates. These actually hang out from the side, and when they're irritated, they get swollen.

So if allergens come into your nose, they get swollen and they make your nose congested. And the reason is because it's literally just harder for air to flow into your nose and down your throat. So some of the things you can do is you can use topical nasal steroids like Flonase or Nasonex. You can also consider using things like antihistamines and if you feel like you have allergies, you can get allergy tested and do something called allergy immunotherapy.

I also found out a bit of exercise can help too, since the blood will move from your nose to the muscle that you're working, so your nose stops swelling

I have had this problem my entire so far. I noticed that heat and humidity are the culprit for me, when I tested for allergies I tested negative. No allergies.

I usually suffer in summer, when the heater is on during winter, and when I lie down to sleep. I developed insomnia because I couldn’t sleep with my nose congestion.

fun fact: a blocked nose, without any treatment, can last for up to 2 or 3 weeks nonstop before it clears.

_Having a runny nose is no issue for me. It’s that my nose is always swelling up on the inside, making it hard to breathe. Nothing I use works either. Initially, I used Afrin, which helped at first but later on gave me rebound congestion. My nose problem became far worse & I wasn’t able to breathe through my nose at all._

Some blood pressure medications can also cause this.

I wish that they could just cut down, without cutting them completely off, the nasal turbinates. My ENT surgeon would not cut them down in fear of that I wouldn’t be able to smell anything after the surgery. Bummer for me

None of those sprays this doctor has mentioned has helped me at all. None of the doctors I’ve gone to have helped me either. I’ve had to resort to using Piyenchin nasal spray (also used like eye drops) or natural methods to be able to breathe better. Wish that doctors would actually help nowadays.
