Great tip about pretending that everyone has never met you before. I’ve seen this happen in interviews. I have conducted so appreciate that reminder.

It’s definitely the respectful thing to give your manager a heads up but you definitely don’t work at my company. I’ve seen indirect retaliation so many times when people do this and don’t get the job :(

thanks Abby for bringing this topic up. I believe you can break down internal job into 3 categories: (1) promotion in a small company. (2) promotion in a big organization where you know your future co-workers. (3) promotion in a big organization where you do NOT know your future co-workers. I am currently looking for (3) . Do you have any specifics to look out for?

Second question: In a nutshell, from 2020 to the present, I have been on a "book writing committee, " and I put that under "other activities" on my updated resume. When my late Dad was in high school, he belonged to a band through church. I am Japanese-American, born in Seattle in 1973, where I grew up. Most of his closest friends were in the band. I took the self-study medical coding AAPC course, passed it, and passed the CPC-A exam. And, also served on the book writing committee, as well. It would be GREAT if my interviewer asks me, on her own accord. But, bringing it up myself, I'm not sure if that's a good idea. Also, being 50 in 2023, how relevant (or IRRELEVANT) is it, that I was an Eagle Scout, which I consider one of my life's biggest accomplishments?

Thanks for your suggestion, I am thinking of applying internally in my current company. My supervisor was very nice up until this lead got hires six months back, some unnecessary friction started, now my question is if I apply internally and per your advise, I must tell before in hand to my supervisor, I am concerned how she will treat me leaving current job, since she holds grudges for everything. and what if I don't get that job and forced to stay in my current job. will she, my supervisor treats me nicely? thanks for your help.

Thank you Abby for the tips! If I don’t know the department that I’ll be potentially transferring to, can I still reach out to them using the org chart?

Abby, I have two different questions, both regarding to applying for an internal promotion. I'll break them down into two different posts. First, my company asks internal candidates, "What is frustrating you the most, in your current position?" I don't think it's wise to just say, "Nothing. Rather, I'm just seizing an opportunity to advance." On the other hand, even if answering honestly and diplomatically, it rarely helps to be negative. If I have to be negative, what do you think of "Talk about SITUATIONS that frustrate you, but don't bash any specific individual PEOPLE."

My supervisor is on secondment and has to reapply for their job to become permanent supervisor (the internal role advertised (my area) ), what if i am therefore competing directly with my supervisor for the job, do i still tell them im thinking of applying?

I have been with my current position for 6 months, I want to apply internally to a different department, do you think is too early for that?

So if your boss sucks, you can’t apply for any other internal jobs within the company. Great 😊
