Here's a tip: it apparently doesn't charge if it's completely powered off. Make sure it's in Sleep Mode if you wish to charge it.

Why does everyone always say "line up the + and -" and not to have the straps at the bottom?

TIP: Don't put the joycons on by sliding it from the bottom it will eventually stop working.

You did a he straps wrong. You gotta lock them to stay on.
