6g Pipe Welding Test part3 2' Schedule 80 stick cover pass

Stick welding the cover pass on a 2 inch 6g pipe test. Using excalibur 7018 rods at around 90-95 amps, We cover a few tips for stick welding the cover pass as well as a brief summary of parts 1 and 2 where we did the root pass and hot pass with tig welding ,

I used an Everlast 160 sth for all the welding on this 6g welding test.

sth stands for stick, tig, and high frequency start....this little welding machine is a very affordable and capable tig inverter that can be used with either foot pedal amperage control , or torch switch.

I used the torch switch for this video but I had a chance to play around with the foot pedal for some other joints.

Lincoln excalibur 7018s are nice. the slag seems to come off more easily than some other rods I have tried....and the excalibur rod has a slightly heavier flux coating that deposits more metal.
This machine compares to other machines like the lincoln v155 and miller maxstar 150 models. Having high freq start is a huge deal because a no touch start is important on jobs like 4130 tubing.

Thanks for all of these helpful videos. I am an apprentice boilermaker and have my first 6g test coming up next week at a nuclear power plant. I have been reviewing your videos over and over, and it is easy to take what you say and apply it when I practice. I just purchased a few tig fingers and I am sure I will be getting a lot of use out of it over the coming years. Thanks again!!!

Thanks Jody, I never realized that these tests existed, really appreciate you sharing this "Art". It is amazing what you welders can do! Something that many laymen would never realize.

I made my first 6G practice today on a 2 inch pipe and used this tips. The pinkie-thumb prop was very good, i could weld 1/3 of the pipe on each side with perfecresults and a easy weave after beading the top bevel sides!
Thanks again Jody! You helped me get through bevel by recognize sound and the keyhole! Im about to get my 6g IW diploma soon and these tips made the lot difference! Im gonna try 6g on TIG with these Tig-finger from your shop too, very handy for pipes, i like to be lazy and not to free hand alot ^^

Thanks again Jody!

Its totally awesome that jody did this video, especially with the free hand TIG (Heli-Arc) welding. In standard test that we boilermakers have to take You have to free hand all of the tig...if you walk that cup they'll send you on your way with no work and no pay! This video is so cool to me because even though walking the cup great for huge pipe etc. it is absolutely impossible with boiler tubes. Thanks again Jody the videos are the BEST i have ever seen anywhere

Your videos, even after years of schooling and handfuls of different instructors/people in the trade giving me advice, still help me! Can never have too many different ways to approach a weld! Thank you!

Last night I found some old scrap and some small rods to practice your finger collapse technique. By the time I covered the scrap with beads my welds were crisp and straight.
Thanks Jody

I haven't welded in over 3 years, I took a supervisor job. I used to weld x-ray pipe all metals (stainless, inconel, NICU, CUNI, ect). I like the money as a supervisor BUT I REALLY MISS WELDING!

"got to be tough if you're gonna be dumb".
Love it, wish I had used that quote with some of my students when I was still a weld instructor !!!

@ECSBsleeper It's a common test used to certify welders. One test joint certifies both processes.

i believe the difference is that 7018 mr is plain mild steel.
7018-1 mr complies with AWS AWS A5.1/A5.1M: 2004 and has a slightly higher nickel addition...
7018-a1 mr has additions of molybdenum for welding higher alloys
bottom line is that unless you are welding a higher alloy, the plain 7018 mr is fine.
