Thanks I’m taking this test now I was running 1/8 6010 at about 85-90 amps very hard to control today I’ll try 3/32 at about 65-70 amps hopefully that will work with 3/32 cap at about 70-80 amps

You may have already done a video like this, but can you do a 6g where you weld both sides of the pipe start to finish without moving the pipe off the stand?

Bob, you remember when we were the new kids on the block burning rods against them crusty old welders? Now I'm a crusty old welder and these new kids have all these great tools machines and are talented. Newest machine I have is a 1973 Miller portable, everything else is from the 40'S and 50'S.

Nice video, Bob. I think the lady that requested the video was limited to 1/8" 6010. I wish they let me use 3/32" on my tests bc it'd be a lot easier. It did however force me to use 1/8" and now it's just gravy welding.

I like your style there Mr. Moffatt. I would take welding instruction from you any day. I also like the path the channel has been going down with a broader scope of the welding world. Thank you for your wonderful teachings.

I just busted a 6G 2” sch 80 cause I had some sick back.. never had issues with my root till doing this test. 1/8 6010 is too hot I needed to make a bigger land and go down to 3/32 for root and cap. Ya live ya learn! Still sucks to fail a test though

What was the gap and the land ? Also would be great to write down the wall thickness of the pipe ( for the metric friends ). Thanks for the demonstration and also thank you for the feedback in the comments section . I appreciate it very much.P.S. How is it going with the 7018 root on pipe? I'm waiting for it like a kid wait's for Santa.

Hi Bob, I have an interesting one for you. Ever heard of doing a Gas Main in 6010 all the way?
Well we have a new Gas Main being run up the middle of the road outside of the school maintenance workshop where I work, and out of interest I said hello to the welder. I asked him what rods he was using and he said Cellulose all the way! I asked what rod number and he replied 6010 all the way. Needless to say I was somewhat surprised after watching numerous US based You Tube welders, I was expecting 6010 root, 6010 hot pass, then fill with Low Hydrogen 7018, so the 6010 all the way really threw me. I have also heard that people also use 6013, particularly in the UK and 6013 is a very commonly available rod here.
Here are the pipe details; 219.1 mm X 6.4 mm X 11.8 m API 5L X 42 PSL 1, then there are details for the coating and the heat number, and pipe number. I am very interested to hear your thoughts and comments about this.
I have posted a photo of the pipe details to my Google+, for those of you wishing to read the details direct.

I was welding up some 3" pipe with a 1/8" rod an i was having a hard time keeping it in there. I thought I had the shanks for a minute. But seeing this video now it was just the size of the rod i was using.

I was wondering if you could do a video of a pipe weld of.6G pipe welding SMAW 2" SCH 40 carbon steel. I had to weld one of these to get a job to be a welder. IIt was a bend test. I had problem with the heat and the how much to push in on the root pass since it was a bend test. I'm going back to school during the summer for welding and I will try to get another welding test. Any help you can give me will help.

I tried this test with 2" schedule 40 but all I had was 1/8" 6011 rod I have a miller multimatic 215 which I believe doesn't have a arc force setting. I started out ok but my fit up was not good since all I have is a bandsaw and a grinder.

Not criticism, but when a Jedi master does something i like to know why. When restarting on your second electrode why did you not clean of the slag from your first electrode run? It must be a great privilege to be on your course!!

Bob is welding with 6011 about the same as welding with 6010?
