I'm re Tired now but I started wielding in 1975, One of the old timers told me that you could tell if your root pass was going in well It sounded like eggs frying, I got pretty cocky when I was younger, I could set that machine at 90 tightened up the gap And push 6010 and take my helmet off, And listen to it, That's Youth for you, Sounds a little stupid now but I got by with it. Only one problem With being good, I got all the hard Wells. I had a hard one once that I couldn't really see I got so into it that I almost took my helmet off, If you've ever had Welding Burns to your eyes You know what I'm talking about. It's like having sand blowed in your eyes, Not good!!!

I noticed very little tacks. I always make sure I got 1" to 1.25" tacks at the 12 and 6 so the gap stays uniformed as I put the root in.

Would like to see an 7018 out from the root. I have trouble blowing through about 7 o’clock with 7018 on hot pass.
