In this one, we are practicing a 2 inch, Schedule 80, 6G pipe welding test. We use 3/32" 6010 for the root, and 3/32" 7018 for the cap. We are practicing this test so that we can put in a bid on an upcoming piping job. Hope you guys learn something, and I hope you guys enjoy it. Lets hope this one works out! 🤞

Great timing on this video. Last month I took the 3G stick test at school and passed 5 months ahead of graduation and probably going to do the 6G next just like this one in the video. Thx for all the pointers.

If you watch your hyper speed I noticed your stick oscillation was much better at 27:33 - 27:49 and that was some of your best beads.

I had to definitely let the metal cool down a little more often between passes a to keep the beads from sagging .

Love the the drive and determination to kick 6Gs ass. Can’t count how many times I stuck a rod and threw it across the room. That was CLASSIC at the end 😂😂😂!!!!

What Code (ASME Section IX, is pressure API for petroleum or AWS D1.1) and WPS/PQR are you running to, Where is a CWI (on sight) to inspect the joint fit up and the Root pass along with verify the process. Amp ranges to stay in accordance with a Qualified WPS

I know I’m a little late to the game but I just discovered your channel and a new sub. I’ve been a certified pipe welder ( 6g sch 80) for 25 years and one small suggestion is a stringer cap. I used 1/8- 7018, 3 bead stringer cap. No real movement other than dragging it and overlapping each bead by 1/2. I enjoy your videos, keep ‘em comin and best of luck to you!

I am right there with you. Just started a couple of days ago prepping some 2-7/8 pipe but I have to hand bevel it. 25 year backs I certified with high pressure (tig root and hot pass with 7018 filler and cap on 6") but let my cert lapse and never thought I would weld much. Now I am trying to start it all back up as a side hustle.

Something you might try is lowering your coupon and putting a file in the end of the pipe so you an put your weak arm over it and steady it more or you can take a clamp and put it on the channel and prop your weak arm against it so you can be more steady. I have used files, vice grips, clamps, etc. I am sure you will find a way.

Just some ideas from one welder to another.

I work with pipeline welders running 6010 or 8010 downhill on gas transmission pipelines. Running uphill seems like it would be a little tougher. A lot of heat and working against gravity.

Hey man I’ve been watching for a while never really comment on anything but I’m a big fan. I’ve been a welder for about 15 years and I love your videos, just a tip on this test I’ve had success with if your open to it, when it comes to the 7018 part, I would be down between 75-80 amps and run small circles (basically stringers) and make a two bead cap. Big fan and keep up the awesome videos

Nice video and solid progress! I’ve only had to take 1 6g test but the procedure was job specific which wasn’t very common. I had 6” pipe, only the top piece had a bevel, a chill ring for a backer, 7018 root, and .045 dualshield the rest of the way out. It was alittle tricky for me bc I’m an ironworker so my pipe welding history was pretty limited to tube braces and handrail for the most part. After a few practice mockups I was able to pass. For me I found that if I chick the rod in the stinger angled down towards the base of the stinger I can just roll my wrist around and it eliminates the natural push angle that I run into as i progress uphill. Also I tend to run tighter stringers and more passes so that I don’t have to fight the undercut as much. Maybe some vice grips clamped on somewhere for an elbow rest, or possibly another bracket with a small chunk of pipe welded to it for an elbow rest? Comfort is key and practice is king!

I DIG IT DUDE!!! I am a NDT guy. ASME IX is hard to do, dude. Things pretty much have to be perfect. Like the rounded indications are are 1/8” or 20% of the wall thickness. Whatever is the smallest.

You know how to weld, so you will get it. You just have to keep at it dude. There are a lot of ways to do this test. You just really have to find out what works for you.

I have weld some pipe in the 6G and Iam not there yet to pass code but it was fun. Just a little bit more for me, then I got it.

Keep crushing it dude.

Hey man, been watching for awhile I’d like to see maybe a video on that monster coupon. Tig root and hot pass, 7018 fill and cap.

I'm a certified JB tack welder. ;) I've never tried welding pipe. Doubt I ever will, as a hobbyist. I did take a MIG 2F test and passed it once a long time ago, so, yeah, I'm AWS "certified." 😂
