Sleep Spindles: Where They Come From, What They Do
“Sleep spindles are extensively studied electroencephalographic rhythms that recur periodically during non-rapid eye movement sleep and that are associated with rhythmic discharges of neurons throughout the thalamocortical system.”

Reduced sleep spindle activity in schizophrenia patients
“Sleep spindles are generated by the thalamic reticular nucleus in conjunction with specific thalamic nuclei and are modulated by corticothalamic and thalamocortical connections.”

Busy Brains Make for Deeper Sleep
“Sound sleepers share a surprising secret: a bustling brain. A new study reports that people who can sleep through anything show more frequent bursts of brain activity called sleep spindles than do their light-sleeping counterparts.”

Study: How Our Brains Make Us Light or Heavy Sleepers
“How many times do you wake during the night? Do the slightest disturbances — the sound of a toilet flushing, say, or the TV in the next room — rouse you from sleep, while your partner slumbers soundly through a thunderstorm?”

I'm a massive heavy sleeper. One time paramedics were called out to my house because of my mum and they came banging up the stairs (told so by my parents and siblings) and I just slept though it. Even though my bedroom was right over the stairs. Another time there was this massive storm in my town which kept everyone in my family up, but I slept quite happily through it.

My friends have filled their snapchats with videos of them hitting me with random objects, blaring sirens in my face, and so forth, while I am asleep. I swear that when I fall asleep my ears shut off and I go deaf until my body decides to wake up the next day. I don't sleep, I hibernate.

I'm a light sleeper. I can just feel when someone's watching me or when the door slowly opens or if it's too quiet, I just wake up. I can hear the smallest of tapping of footsteps. It's a a curse and a blessing.

At the end of my last school year, I couldn't wake up to my alarm because I was so deprived of sleep! :(

I love this! I'm SUCH a heavy sleeper, and probably wouldn't even wake up from a fire alarm. I personally hate it, because I'm a closeted A-type person. I've noticed that the more stressed I am and the more stuff I have to think about, the harder it is to wake up regardless of how much sleep I got. So the whole "your brain is actually more active" makes so much more sense to me than "your brain just shuts off" explanation.

My parents, waking me for school, would turn on the lights, give me two cups of coffee, yell at me and finally throw a bucket of water over me and I'd still continue to sleep. Sometimes they would drag me to the bathroom and I'd open the hot water faucet and continue sleeping in the bathtub and I'd only wake up to tell my parents I wasn't ready yet and continue sleeping a little more. ^_^

I always watch YouTube or play a game on my phone every night in order to fall asleep. I notice if I don't get electronic light I won't sleep unless I'm exhausted.

One time a fire alarm in my room 5 feet from my bed went off. There was no fire and my parents didn't know what to do so they called the fire department which is about five miles away. The time they arrived it was still beeping so they got a ladder and tried to see what was wrong with the fire alarm. It has been about 20 minutes as I was told and didn't wake up till they started fiddling with the fire alarm. I saw 3 fire men in my room and I thought "I guess I have an excuse to sleep in algebra class". And fell back asleep before the alarm stopped beeping.

I have always been a very light sleeper, this also means that I often wake at night because of random noises. My brother, who I currently share an appartment with, can sleep through anything ... it's not uncommon that his alarm is buzzing for 20-30 minutes before he wake up (did I mention that I'm a light sleeper!) :S

When I know I have to get up early in the morning, I wake up early. If I know I don't, I could sleep all day (or at least past noon).
...Is that normal?
