this is the two first weeks of my art school packed into 6 minutes, fuck

I picked up exercises like this a year or two back, and still use some of them as warm ups. They really helped me transition from making a series of small fuzzy lines to try and find the next line on the page to seeing it in my head before it's made.

Something that helps me and might help others if your hands are shaky; exhale when you draw your lines. Professional photographers exhale when they take pictures, because that’s when your hands are the most steady, and I find the same applies to drawing line art

This looks like something i can do with all the different ink tools I've horded over the years.

This really works. I'm tapering my strokes now! It's so awesome. It just takes practice.

I actually can't express how much line art frustrates and deflates my confidence. It gets to the point where it looks so bad that I avoid practicing it out of fear of failure (I suppose), which in turn means that I'm not working on the skill itself, so it essentially feels like a never-ending circle. My old teacher (about 6/7 years back, now) always used to criticise my line work and drawings in general- rather than being constructive criticism, she was rather hurtful about it, looking back at the things she said/ the way she went about saying them- and it really knocked me back, and even now whenever I'm drawing all I can hear are the things she said. The fact that line work goes hand in hand with other fundamentals, like proportion, scale and perspective etc, often puts more pressure on producing perfect lines. Drawing freely yet confidently is something that I want to be able to do, which I'm aiming to work on this year. Did you ever feel similar to this, and if so, do you have any advice on overcoming it? These exercises have given me a new outlook on different approaches of tackling this daunting skill, for me, and I like how they focus on the practical side of it (if that makes any sense haha). With the ellipses part, it's interesting to see just how powerful geometry is in creating perspective, and having tried it now the boxes really do help, like you suggested. Thanks for the tips, imma work on these exercises now...

Nice video! Definitely looking forward to more advanced exercises.
On a personal note, what I like to do is just grab public works from artists I like, turn the image into light blue tone, print it and go over it with a pen or g-pen. This comes at a downside of not being able to share it online, unless you want to get in trouble. But it is good practice basically. Just don't tell anyone you did it.

Can also be done for digital lineart practicing too!

What I find useful about drawing ellipses is when you might have a column on a building. The curve is steeper at the edge and practicing ellipses helps me see this and draw the correct perspective.

"The whole point of this training is to make you suck less at what you suck at" hahahaha.

I cant believe I've never thought/heard of the second one - that's going to be really helpful!

I'm learning by getting over my doubt of a line by drawing on white boards. To teach me to not use more lines than i need, and to teach me control without feeling pressure with it being permanent.

i have done these exercises traditionally earlier and have good line control but dont have it digitally with my small wacom tablet which is barely the size of my hand

It’s like a tightrope walk - you don’t want to look at your feet but where you are headed. (I just made this up - I don’t have a head for heights😊)

Amazing vid, a way to combine short like control and ellipses at the same time is to draw 4 X's in a square shape, connect them like in the video then draw an ellipse inside!

Love the ellipses exercise. Looks like fun and good practice. I should probably do the first one more often.

I liked before even watching because your tips are always top tier

I'm finding it especially hard to make good line art on digital tablet. My hands seem so damn shaky haha
Thanks for this video.
