This video shows a demonstration of the steps taken to get your best shave.

YOUR BEST SHAVE!

1- SOFTEN THE BEARD:
Shave directly after a shower or wash your face with a good face soap and apply a hot towel to properly soften the beard for the shave to come.

2- APPLY A PRE-SHAVE:
Massage the pre-shave into your damp skin to further soften and hydrate the beard. Anything you can do to keep the beard soft and lubricated will help guarantee a smooth close shave and eliminate irritation.

3- USE A QUALITY SHAVING CREAM OR SOAP FROM A JAR OR A TUBE:
Avoid shaving creams from a can that contain harmful chemicals, and propellants. They are fluffy and contain too much air to provide a good cushion, They are also harmful to the environment. Apply your shaving cream directly over the pre shave. This will give the blade a proper cushion to glide across. Use a shaving cream designed for sensitive skin for best results.

4- APPLY YOUR LATHER WITH A SHAVING BRUSH:
The brush will help hydrate, elevate, and soften your beard to prepare if for the shave to come. Brushing on your lather is one of the most enjoyable elements of a great shave!

5- USE A SINGLE BLADE RAZOR WITH A SHARP BLADE:
One blade will slice off the facial hair at the surface of the skin. 2-3-4-5-6-or 7 bladed cartridge razors require pushing force to work properly and will pull the whisker and cut it below the skin’s surface resulting in ingrown hairs and irritation. Insure that your blade is sharp and clean.

6- SHAVE WITH THE GRAIN:
Shave in the directing of your beard growth From top to bottom. Use short strokes and let the razor do the work. Feel around your face with your fingertips. If you’re as smooth as you want to be you can stop after this first pass. If not, perform another pass across the grain. If you must shave against the grain to get super close, save that for your final pass. This process is called Progressive Beard Reduction. The beard is removed gradually until the face is baby smooth!

7- RINSE-Perform a final rinse with cold water. This will tighten the skin, and close your pores

8- APPLY A PROTECTIVE AFTERSHAVE BALM- Pat your face dry with a clean towel. Apply a few drops of a quality aftershave balm to your fingertips and massage it into your skin. You’ve just removed your top layer of skin. This will help calm, seal, and protect your skin.

Have A Great Shave, Have A Great Day!

I may have said this before, l have been wet shaving for years, but until l saw your vids l didn't realize how little l knew. Shaving is now like the Japanese Tea ceremony. Take time, do it right and enjoy it. Cheers mate.

The only thing I would say you forgot (maybe) is the alum stick - I've taken that advice from one of your videos and is now a part of my shave - after I'm done - alum block, rinse, pat dry, balm, aftershave :) Love it!

I hope asking this question makes sense. How does the Mühle R89 safety razor, compare in the closeness of shave if I wanted a single pass versus using a straight razor?

Hi Geo, you were the reason I finally took the plunge and went to straight razor shaving after being a typical Gillette guy for years. The big motivator was price of replacement blades but you showed us/me that given the right equipment and technique, straight razor shaving was simple and a joy.

I now use a Feather Artist Japanese Kamisori blade and absolutely love it, I will never go back to my old ways. One question though and about the piece of equipment that i need help with: the shaving brush.

I use my fathers old one, a synthetic from decades ago. I need to replace it, but with what? My brush now is rather soft and I would prefer something stiffer. How can you tell just from your site which brushes are soft, medium or firm? What are the benefits of badger hair vs horse or hog? Can you do a video explaining each type and the strengths and weaknesses of each?

Thanks and keep up your great work.

I can shave my cheeks really easily but when I shave the mustache and chin area it always leaves a shadow. Usually do more passes to minimize it which leads to razor burn. Would a safety razor help with both those things? And I can always feel the hair even after going against the grain.
