What's the first reason you wouldn't hesitate even for a second to go AWOL?

A friend of my dads went AWOL after being drafted during Vietnam and he was originally sentenced to a fate worse then death: a life time sentence to being Canadian, but was later pardoned.

As a U.S Army soldier I can confirm that there is in fact a random 5 star general who roams around each base looking for people and taking money.

I’m a Retired USAF NCO. If you're late for work just stop and buy donuts and say the line was long. Problem solved. Not that I ever did that.

"A new volunteer is never far away." As an active duty servicemember, this speaks volumes.

In 1999 I was an Army Captain and Company Commander stationed at Fort Hood, TX. I had a soldier go AWOL and never returned (deserted). Fast forward to 2011. I am now a Lieutenant Colonel and am stationed in Korea. One morning I get a call from a JAG officer from the States asked if I remembered the soldier who had deserted back in 1999. I sat back in my chair and told the JAG officer that I remembered the soldier VERY well. The soldier was stopped by the police in Alabama for expired tags and was subsequently identified as having deserted the Army in 1999. The JAG officer told me to be prepared to testify at his court martial. I didn't have to. I never learned the outcome of the soldier's court martial.
