Thinking about skipping out on meat and dairy? Going vegan is becoming increasingly more common, but is it actually good for you?

Following is the transcript of the video:

What happens to your body when you go vegan?

Thinking of making the jump to a vegan diet? You’re not alone.

In your first few weeks, you may feel especially tired. Without meat, vegans often have a hard time getting enough vitamin B12 and iron, which helps make red blood cells and transport oxygen throughout the body. But it’s nothing a supplement or handful of nuts can’t fix.

You may also discover that foods don’t taste the way they used to. That’s because your zinc levels have taken a hit, affecting your overall sense of taste and smell.

On the plus side, expect to lose some weight right away! After switching, new vegans lost an average of 10 pounds over a 10 month period. Plus, a 2009 study found that average BMI was lower for vegans than all other diets.

Another benefit that you may experience is a healthy decrease in cholesterol, blood pressure, and heart disease risk. In 1999, a study showed that vegans were 24% less likely to have clogged arteries from saturated fat and cholesterol.

While your arteries are better off, your bones may not be. If you’re like most Americans who get their daily calcium from dairy products, you may see a dip in calcium levels.

But you can combat this simply by boosting your intake of kale, broccoli, and other leafy greens. Plus, cutting out dairy might make you more … regular. 60% of humans don’t have the enzyme to properly digest lactose in dairy. The result is cramping, bloating, and even diarrhea. Swapping dairy with high fiber veggies will make bathroom trips a lot more productive.

Like any diet, veganism has its pros and cons. Be sure to research and see which diet is best for you.

I’m vegan and I wasn’t tired at all when I began the transition to a vegan diet. I felt immediately better during the first 48 hours, in fact.

It's not a diet. It's a lifestyle.

Im 18 and after watching a documentary on Netflix it just broke me apart. I've always wanted to be vegan since I was 14 and now I'm going to make the change as an adult because my parents can't stop me now

I’m 13, and been vegan for a year. I’ve never felt so good! It’s really true, foods begin to start tasting better such as vegetables and fresh fruits (which i never really favored). I love being vegan!

I feel GREAT as a vegan. I truly do. I love this diet. Especially knowing what they do to animals in slaughterhomes. Best transition of my life.

I’m vegan. I’m not tired. In fact I’m less tired now I’m vegan. I don’t need extra vitamins either. The calcium dip is a lie as well. And going vegan has NO CONS, ONLY PROS

I've been vegan nine years from vegetarian. My blood pressure came down from too high, I became fully fertile for the first time in my life and I don't have gout or other issues anymore. Plus the factor that I'm not adding gross amounts of harm to other beings is amazing. No regrets whatsoever.

Tomorrow makes me 30 days vegan, I'm currently obese and was addicted to food, I did this to get in better shape for my kids and my wife and honestly I've never felt better in my life, and I've developed a healthy relationship with food. It was hard at first because I was also an alcoholic, (30 days sober tomorrow also), i kept constant headaches and stomach issues because I feel I was withdrawing from alcohol as well as my body adjusting to this new diet, but after the first week I was ok and felt great and my overall health physically and mentally has definitely improved. This lifestyle saved me. I'm glad I chose to take this journey.

I went vegetarian a while back for a couple months (my goal was to go vegan) and noticed that I felt a lot better. I didn't feel tired throughout the day, I had more energy than I did when I ate meat. My skin improved, I didn't get pimples. My headaches decreased. Omg when I ate, I never felt sluggish when I was done. When I ate meat, I would most of the time feel sick, and even felt like I had to throw up. Cutting meat out was one of the best things that happened to me. Unfortunately I did start back eating meat, but the good news is that I'm trying to go vegan this time.

OH MY GOD... I went from an Iron deficient little meat eater with a bloodpressure so low I would faint at times, but going vegan helped and got rid of those problems completely, and no I don't take Iron supplements!

Btw why would someone who doesn't drink cows milk be calcium deficient when cows milk isn't even designed for us to drink?! I mean it's so obvious when you think about it. And you clearly didn't have good facts since we all know milk is too acidic for our bodies so the bones have to release calcium to neutralize it... There's a reason the biggest cow milk-drinking countries have the highest amount of osteoporosis (brittle bones)... I mean do your research, come on...
