Each year in the United States, players of sports and recreational activities receive between 2.5 and 4 million concussions. How dangerous are all those concussions? The answer is complicated and lies in how the brain responds when something strikes it. Clifford Robbins explains the science behind concussions.

can we talk about the amazing job the animator did on this video?

It's an odd thing to think about, but if your skull was made of steel, concussions would happen even more often. No matter how strong your head is, your brain will still bounce around your skull on sudden impacts.

I learned more from this than from my experience of a concussion. For example, I had constant headaches for several months after my initial injury, yet no one was able to diagnose me. It's insane that a 6-minute video taught me more about my concussion than 5+ doctors did.

Excellent video. I had Post-concussive syndrome for more than a year when I was in high school, failed many classes and almost didn't graduate on time. If anyone is going through this right now, stay strong; I'm one year away from finishing my BS in biology with a 3.72 GPA and am currently applying to get my doctorate in physical therapy. There is hope!

I was going to think of a great pun, but i couldn't think of anything that had the right impact. I stopped while i was ahead.

this narrator, I swear... he's so gifted. I could listen to him say whatever nonsense all day long and I wouldn't get bored ^_^

The art style in this animation is one of the best I have seen from TED-Ed

Ah, this is a lifesaver. I'm writing a piece where a character gets knocked on the head hard enough to be diagnosed with a concussion, but since I couldn't find clear research sources I was going to go into it head-first, in complete darkness. Thank you for posting this!

I had pcs for well over a year. Today marks a year since I got off the medicine prescribed to treat my constant headaches. Praise God!

I've had PCS. It was rather frightening; it became very difficult to judge distances. So, things far away from me would suddenly jump, while I was looking at them, to be very close to me. Or at least, that is how I experienced it. It made it hard to go through traffic, as you can imagine.

Coming from someone who has had somewhere between 15-20 concussions, this video hits home. It's been roughly 7 months since my last concussion and my short term memory is still struggling. I'm just hoping one day I'll eventually be normal again.

I’m going through post-concussion syndrome right now. I was rear-ended late last year, on my final week of classes (and my degree). If my doctor had stressed to me to rest for 2 weeks, I would’ve followed through, but because I didn’t, I’m paying for it now.

I’m sensitive to light, especially when flashing, I feel more depressed nowadays, I’ll randomly have a crying fit, I have blurry vision, loss of balance, and my grammar is sometimes switched or I pause and lose my train of thought often. It’s getting worse as the stress piles on: I was really freaked out last week, an instructor was having a hard time trying to explain something to me in the simplest way, and I was trying so hard to listen, but I just couldn’t hear what they were telling me to do. I also zone out or get distracted easily when reading directions, or listening to people talk in-general.

I have to go to a concussion clinic to get checked outs. But I’m afraid of them telling me that I need to take 3-4 months off from my Master’s program to recover. I know it’s the only way for me to be myself again, and succeed in school, but it really upsets me.

Saw the movie "Concussion", it is the story of Dr. Omalu's discovery. It took me some research to understand it, I wish this short video was made then!

As someone who's had 3 concussions, I can look back and see differences in my health and mental abilities over that time. None of them were given the time to heal that they needed, and one of my fears is that I might end up with CTE and my family would have to watch me as I slowly lose myself.

I have a fourth protective layer. It’s called the Doesn’t Mater. It protects my brain from getting over stressed.

I love how although the begging is depressing it ends up with something more positive.
