I have been using puppy Linux for many years on all my computers. It's excellent running from a USB stick.

Some of these are nowhere lightweight, but some really light ones are missing (Bodhi Linux, Astra Linux, CRUX, Void Linux etc etc)

I use Q4OS for my Samsung NC10 (2008 netbook with Atom CPU and 2GB Ram). It takes only 240MB ram and works fine.

Many thanks for this. Lots of great information & pointers on how to exit Windows & enter into the big, confusing & scary (to a newcomer) world of Linux. It's much appreciated.

Q4OS Plasma is not light distro, Trinity version is. There is really no need to install something esle beside Mint Mate or XFCE or Ubuntu Mate or Lubuntu. Xubuntu has some issues with quality, but when it works, works good. MX Linux is also good. Avoid Manjaro, Solus. Mageia XFCE is ok but not really 100% QA checked. There are some minor issues, luckily all easy to solve.
Purpose of Antix, Puppy and simmilar distros for PC/Notebook capable for web browsing is not really clear to me. Yes, RAM consumption is low but ergonomy of XFCE, MATE, LXqT is simply better than of those windows managers IceWM, JWM and such. XFCE, MATE need about 450-650 MB RAM, LXqT needs about 350 MB. I consider 2 GB RAM as minimum for decent linux distro (with full DE not just window manager).

Bunsen Labs is NICE.., Antix is even BETTER, but NOT for a newbie.. MX is the absolute BEST of all of these... MID weight only.. but SUPER fast full of great tools- highly customizable.. and ROCK SOLID--- I also have SPARKY 7 Linux now-- it's SUPER FAST (better than arch), ROCK SOLID and simple- and with kde on it like mine- highly customizable. (alghtouh it features like 23 DEs).. and It has the tools like MX-- DEBIAN BASED on DEBIAN
