Cactus is incredibly useful, some can even supply a tasty treat or moisture. If you plan on foraging cactus, make sure you have positively identified your regional varieties so that protected or harmful varieties are avoided. Be safe and respectful out there.

Although not the same species of cactus, here in Mexico is really common to see Opuntia cacti or Prickly Pear Cactus, colloquially named "Nopal". A lot of the times its grilled to give it a better flavor but it can also be eaten raw (without the spines of course). Good source of manganese, vitamin C, antioxidants and calcium.

Careful. Eat the wrong cactus, and you might start seeing giant mushroom friends.
