So glad to see this emerging advice. I've always needed less sleep. I even used to joke I wasn't born to sleep. I'll do it when I'm dead. When I was younge, in times of stress (not permanently) I could be alert for a week around the clock with just small naps any time of the day or night when I felt sleepy. Now I'm approaching 50 and 6 hours is my usual. Eight hours if I'm extra tired. Many think I have insomnia. I don't. I fall asleep within ten minutes of my head hitting the pillow, never toss and turn, etc whatever people do and wake up when I'm done. Can do it in comfortable beds, hard floor, bus seats, anywhere. No such thing as inability to sleep. I just wake up when I'm done.

It has increased as I get older, but not even close to 8-10 hours every night. If I sleep ten hours (rare on long train journeys or when homebound + winter + pandemic) I wake up groggy while I wake up alert and raring to go with 6 hours, no problem. As I grow older and am trying to care for my health, the increased need for sleep used to make me feel guilty about not having good habits, etc, but it just doesn't work. And even at this age, it is easier to skip sleep altogether than it is to stay asleep for ten hours in terms of alertness.

We Icelanders have bright summers with long days. In summer season. I can sleep 2 or 1 hours, and I'm fine, but I sleep 8 hours in the winter.
