This is so true my husband is Japanese and I’m American and when we first started Dating we was in Walmart together I reached out for his hand wanted to hold his hand. Well he said no it’s awkward. I said this is US. it’s fine. But he still felt uncomfortable. Thrue out the years I did get him to start feeling more comfortable and he will actually kiss me in public. But not like making out kind of kiss. No one needs to see that. But just a small little kiss. He is fine with it now. It just takes time to get used to.
