In this video we give a good example of how it will sound when your rear axle gears are simply worn out. In the near future there will be a full repair video on the Ford 9.75" Rear Axle Rebuild.

My 2000 f150 with a 9.75 is howling pretty good between 45-55 but is still loud at all speeds when accelerating. Instead of rebuilding it I opted to get a used unit. I'm still looking forward to watching the rebuild series, even if it is beyond my capabilities.

"old" vid by now, but relevant for all of time. My 2005 Mustang GT at 58k miles is sounding EXACTLY like this! Has since about 45k miles, and has been driving me nuts! And now it is
its getting louder with every 500 miles.

I hear this when driving and coasting. What could that mean? TIA

I have a very similar and distinct sound between 35 and 45 MPH on my 2003 Grand Marquis with 189k miles. It's been there since 150k miles. The sound doesn't come before and after this speed range. And since my drive is almost always on highway, I rarely notice it.

Ahh, the ol' familiar sound of every single one of the vehicles I owned from age 16 to 25. 😁

What would happen if you just continue driving it like that? Could it survive another 50 000 miles with the sound?

I’m still waiting for Ford to fix mine under warranty. 2021 F250 with almost 10k miles. Started doing this around 7500 miles. 😑

Interesting. My new Speedmaster Worm Drive rear end sounds exactly like this and its brand new. But its not worn its a worm drive gear and when new they sound this way during break in for about 500 miles. Great video.

My rear end is making the exact noise. I would like another video from you on how to properly set the gear clearances in the differential.

The worst part of this problem is that around here almost none of the mechanics will touch a diff job. I finally found somebody that would take the job, and they have a good reputation, but he this is March 12 and they've had the car since Nov. 23rd. They actually Brought in someone from outside their shop to help with the setup. All I do is wait for the call to come get it.

I recently had the rear end completely rebuilt in my 2007 F150 after a U-joint broke. Found the bearings and gears worn. New gears, bearings, seals and fluid. I hear this same sound/noise currently as well as always on this truck since it was new. I now have 132, 000 miles. Everyone i have spoken to say this is a normal sound on these rear ends, particularly with the 3.75 gears. What is your input or opinion on this. May be a slightly different noise but it does sound like the clip in the video.

Need help. I have a 2008 f150 that has a whining noise only when turning and only after I've driven it over several Miles. So for instance I can drive to the store(10miles) without it making a sound. However if I drive let's say 40+ Miles when I turn it whines as if it's the power steering. But sitting still I can turn the wheels and no sound at all so it's not the pump or pullys making the noise. I did a rear differential service at 90k miles with full synthetic and I currently have 145k and just did another change with full synthetic and a friction modifier. Still no change

Hahaha I just did this job about two weeks ago. Took me a day and a half of full work. I installed the aftermarket ford finned diff cover and GT500 carbon fiber clutches on my 2008 Mustang GT diff. I did the axle bearings a year ago but I over filled the diff and never changed the damn vent bolt and I suspect the combo of that made the pressure rise too much and my axle seals burst and effectly disabled my rear brakes and pads and diff fluid. It was a mess. I replaced all pads, rotors, seals, bears, clutches, and the carbon discs as well as the cover.

That S spring and aligning the gears was not fun, but theres some nice vids on youtube with a few tricks you can use in addition to a big hammer...

I have a Grand Marquis that was re-geared to 3.73 by a driveline shop. It makes that exact same noise in those speed ranges. I've had them try to re-gear it four times and it is always the same noise.

The shop keeps blaming Fords for being noisy.

Funny thing is right after I bought a 97 F150, it had a recall. While fixing it, they said they accidentally knocked off the driveshaft weight and had to replace the driveshaft. After that, I’ve had this rear end whine and when I took it back, they said it was the Firestone tires. 10 years later I replaced the tires and still have the whine to this day. It started at 3k miles and the truck now has 97k. I don’t know what they screwed up but it’s not worn gears.

I have 2002 F150 lightning and it makes Noise and all gears and all Speeds due to the fact the vent tube get a crack in it and they were years back-and-forth to the lake with a Sea-Doo and filled it full of water. Yeah not good. Drained and wiped out best I could put friction modifier in And new fluid still makes a lot of noise so I guess I need to rebuild the whole thing any videos on a 9.75 3.73 rebuild?
