Husband Doesn't Want Wife To Be Stay At Home Mom....WHAT!?

A husband wrote in to Slate and described why he thinks it's wrong for his wife to want to become a stay at home mom to their newborn child. This is everything wrong with our culture.

Most women don't want to go back to work when they have kids even though many won't admit to wanting this. We naturally want to be with our kids, nothing wrong with that.

We were lucky. My wife wanted to stay at home and raise our children. Yes we didn't eat out at fancy restaurants, take expensive vacations or drive fancy cars. What we did have was happy children and happy wife. We didn't have stress on the mornings one of the kids were sick, trying to find someone to care for them for the day. What we didn't have were arguments over who would have to take the day off work to care for our sick children.
And lastly, what we don't have is regrets for my wife's decision to stay at home and raise our children.

This dude wrote that he likes that his wife is “empowered” but won’t respect a choice she wants to make? I thought feminism was about women making choices. If women want to stay at home with their children, what’s so wrong with that? Maybe if children were raised by a stay at home parent and not by a babysitter, we wouldn’t be having all the issues we have right now.

When our son was born, my wife worked and made more than I did. She wanted to be a stay-at-home mom, but we just weren't sure we could afford it. After 9 months, she was so miserable, we decided to just make it work. She quit her job, and we made ends meet from my salary. One of the best decisions we ever made. There was a lot we had to do without, but even that, I think, made us stronger.

My mother was a stay-at-home mom. I remember it was so comforting to know that when I got home from school, my mother would be there. If I was hungry she would feed me, if I was sick she would take care of me, if I had a question she would answer it, if I had a problem she could solve it. She is the one person in the world who really truly loves you. Don't take her away.

Sounds like my ex husband. Except he agreed with me staying home and then later told me I was not "contributing".

If he thinks caring for a child counts as "laziness" or "lacking ambition" I dare him to spend one afternoon caring for his child on his own. Children are precious and deserve to be raised by someone who loves them, ideally, that would be the parents.

I WISH I could be a stay at home mom, but I can’t because I’m a single mom. Being a stay at home mom is a blessing and if you have the opportunity you should do it!
