Will I Wake Up During Surgery?

It is very unlikely to wake up or remember anything during the surgery, says HSS anesthesiologist Dr. Meghan Kirksey. Your level of sleep depends on the type of anesthesia you’ll be getting. Dr. Kirksey estimates nearly 90% of her orthopedic patients request to be asleep during their surgery. You, your surgeon, your anesthesiologist will discuss the best anesthesia option for your individual needs before the operation.

Lol notice, she didn't say "You won't wake up while under anesthesia." Instead it was, "It's exceedingly unlikely you'll recall what happens during surgery."

I'm 16 and I've been under anesthesia 6 times in my life. 4 of those times were for surgery. The first time I was under was when I had some teeth removed so i could have braces later put on. I remember waking up feeling weird and confused and according to my parents I acted very funny. The second time I was under was for the first time I had surgery which I had a hemangioma removed from my neck. I remember when I woke up I felt very well rested and I felt fine. The third time I was under was for a bone marrow biopsy. The other two times I had been under was through a mask gas sedation, for the bone marrow biopsy the anesthesia was given through an iv. My body did not react well to that anesthesia at all. I remember waking up and my vision was completely blurry so I could not see a thing. I remember a nurse asking me if i could hear her which in could but barely. My vision and hearing slowly came back as minutes passed but i remember vommiting shortly after I woke up. The fourth time I was under anesthesia was for an interventional radiology embolization procedure to block off a huge aneurysm in my left thigh. I couldn't move for 2 hours after that embolization so my anesthesiologist gave me pain medicine that kept me asleep for that time. When I woke up I was confused but felt well rested. My interventional radiologist wasn't able to block off the entire aneurysm that time so a little over a month later I had another embolization procedure done so I was under anesthesia for a 5th time. My interventional radiologist was able to block off the entire aneurysm that time. My interventional radiologist originally thought I would have to lay still for 4 hours after that embolization but after it was done I had to stay still for 2 hours. When I woke up I was in the most physical pain I had ever been in. It felt like a sledgehammer was hitting me super hard in my left thigh. My anesthesiologist had given me pain medicine but it didn't work at all that time and I woke up 30 minutes into the 2 hours. I was crying at the top of my lungs when I woke up, I remember my parents coming in and my mom saying that I needed to be quieter so that I wouldn't scare other patients. I started moving my leg but was then told I had to keep my left leg still for an hour and a half. Not moving my leg at all while it was in throbbing pain was probably the hardest thing I have ever done. It was so hard to not scream during that hour and a half. After that embolization no matter what I did the pain just wouldn't go away and I was having really bad calf pain after that embolization. So my mom called my interventional radiologist and told him about the pain I was in. He wanted to have an ultrasound done as soon as possible so 5 days after the embolization I went back to the hospital for an ultrasound and there was a massive blood clot in my leg which was a side effect from the aneurysm. So I was in the hospital for 5 days. I was admitted right after the ultrasound and a thrombectomy was scheduled for the next day. So the next day I went under anesthesia for the 6th time in my life and for the second time in less than a week. After the thrombectomy we were told I had to keep my body still for 8 hours so my anesthesiologist and gave me pain medicine(which thankfully worked) and she and the care team also gave me sleep medicine that kept me asleep for the rest of the day. I remember waking up off and on throughout that time but was only awake for less than 3 minutes and I was able to sleep through 99 percent of that time. All 6 times I've been under anesthesia it was like a blink, it was like I was breathing through the mask then the next thing I knew I was in the recovery room. PS, I'm doing so so SO much better now than I was when the blood clot stuff happened
