Why We Don’t Have 3-Day Weekends (The History of Work Hours)

Do you ever wonder why we work from 8am to 5pm? It's a schedule that has become the norm for many of us, but have you ever stopped to think about its origins?

The 8am-5pm workday has a long and complex history, shaped by a range of social, economic, and political factors. It all started with the Industrial Revolution, when factory owners began requiring workers to work long hours, often from sunrise to sunset.

In the late 1800s, labor activists and trade unions began advocating for more reasonable working conditions. The movement gained momentum, and by the early 1900s, the 8-hour workday had become standard in many industries.

Today, the 8am-5pm work schedule is the norm for many office jobs and other white-collar professions.

Everyday workers organized, fought, and died for the right to the 8-5 workday. It was never "given".

This guy is a hustler.

Work houses and a lack of labour laws proliferated for a long time. It was the labour workers that forced change.

The problem was that early industrial revolution work hours were 12-14 hours a day 6 days a week. They didn't care if is was safe. They had kids working in mines and mills with no regard for safety.

The 8-5 is the work of labor movement and unions.

The reason for the set hours as they currently are (including weekends off) are because of the British trade union movement. The Victorian workhouses usually had 11 hour workdays, workers had to fight for the 8 hour standard. It can get better, but it can also get worse.

I’m a Brit. Sun rises at 8am in winter and it’s dark at 4pm. We all go to work in the dark and come home in the dark.

Even the educational system was designed ages ago to suit the rise of the industrial revolution. The world has completely changed. But we are still comfortable.

Henry Ford has entered the conversation. .. also, the fact that the sun cycle around this ball-o-dirt hasn't changed in millions of weeks or months, the schedule still complies well today with what human activity dictates. That is why we are still comfortable with it. I don't find that to be at all strange....😅

So, we work from 8 to 5 because there is daylight. I never ever expected such a brilliant explanation. I was always wondering why is not that from 9PM till 6AM. It would have been so logical, but now I understand the fundamental genius behind it. OMG!!!
