These 5 AP Classes NEED to be Discontinued

The AP program has 40 different AP classes for students to choose from, but some of these classes see almost no interest or have almost no use. After reviewing these 5 AP classes, it can be concluded that it might be best for Collegeboard to discontinue them…

I didn't understand the difference between 2D Art and Drawing until my art teacher explained it to me either. But they're not testing the same skills. Drawing is what it's called, drawing. They're looking for sophisticated mark making, and realistic artwork would fit a Drawing portfolio more than a 2D one. For 2D, they're looking for more graphical things, and you can even do photography for a 2D Art portfolio. If you prefer stuff like graphic design over realistic portraits, then you would pick 2D Art over Drawing. So I feel getting rid of Drawing would put students who prefer the kind of portfolio it asks for at a disadvantage having to pick 2D Art or no AP Art course at all.

Other than that, you made great points. Good video!

My school’s AP Calculus AB/BC teacher took one look at the AP Precalculus curriculum and said, “We’re not doing this.”

As someone who takes Ap African American History, i think it was made specifically because the APUSH curriculum didnt involve a large amount of black historians or black accomplishments. most classes narrow studies of black people down to slavery rather than mentioning african kingdoms and all that 😭 for example, the jim crow era could be 3 class periods long with the amount of events that happened within that timeframe, however most history classes just mention it briefly and move on

I took AP Precalculus last year since I was already in Honors Precalculus. I basically self-studied the topics that I didn't learn in class and got a five. I took one look at the colleges that accept the credit and was like "I fked up." Yeah. Don't take it it's a waste of your time unless you want to show colleges you can take the AP version of an already-on-track math course.

AP Latin mirrors real college courses which all AP classes should do. A real college Latin class is heavily based in translation and that is what AP Latin studies. The Aeneid and Caesar's Gallic Wars both are interesting parts of Roman history and culture. I believe the main purpose of becoming proficient at translation is to be able to decide for yourself what ancient texts may have been truly saying. Texts can have meaning lost in translation but being able to have a good understanding of Latin allows for a more meaningful interpretation of ancient texts. This may not be a practical use but being a proficient student in AP Latin prepares you for the practical uses as well. To succeed in AP Latin you need a very good understanding of vocabulary and seeing that a lot of words in many languages come from Latin you would understand them.

5 AP Classes that NEED more test takers (underrated ap classes)

Next video should be top 5 APs that college board needs to add. IMO that’s smth like: a new math AP like stats where it doesn’t use more advanced math algebra 2 but has different skills tested, AP accounting, AP instrumental music.

4:11 no that's a good ass class, im taking it rn as a sophomore in high school, and ngl that course helped me write a lot better in Spanish and also speak and comprehend the text. AP spanish Lang is just a snippet, while Lit being much harder even for Spanish speaking ppl it even helps my English compression and literary skills. Also the class is a lot more fun than Lang, AP Spanish Lang is very boring talking about the most broad topics ever, and im majoring in architecture im not biased

It really helps a lot, trust. More ppl at my school are finally taking that class, rn we are reading poems and understanding the history and context plus the literary devices, AP themes very complex which helps even for AP English Lang and Lit to become a better writer. Yes it is a lot harder than AP spanish lang but definitely more interesting and by far the Spanish class that has made me better at not just speaking it, bc that's Lang, but understanding it and interpreting it. Give it a shot

I love my AP Spanish lit class, it gives me a chance to further challenge my understanding of my language and learn about Spanish literary history. Yeah it may not be that useful career wise, but it definitely aids in language understanding and writing.

AP Physics 1 not mentioned is a surprise. Of course physics APs are important but there are already 2 other AP Physics courses, and ALL colleges won’t even accept the course.

In terms of my school, AP precalc acts as a sort of safety net, since most people in my high school get to calc AB. Therefore, if you fail the AB exam, precalc (may) save you

AP precalc is really not that hard, it introduces you to the ideas needed for calc AB/BC, which is the hard part since you don’t get them, but the actual work itself is pretty trivial. No reason to avoid it if you plan on taking harder math classes anyways.

African American is an ethnicity not a race. African American History is a survey of the culture, not the solely race and the fact that that difference is not understood underscores why it is needed. Also, you said nothing about AP European History being fruitless.

Coming from a Latin student: The thing about AP Latin is that it's another AP language course and it accurately resembles a real college Latin course. The idea that AP Latin should be discontinued or changed because it doesn't have widely applicable uses is no more valid than saying AP Music Theory (for example) should be discontinued-- yes, their content is not very useful for day-to-day applications or applicable to college in most senses, they're not meant to teach you the most common applications of their subject. They're meant to emulate a college course in the subject and provide an academic study of it. AP Latin also functions as a high-level language course just like AP Spanish or AP French, so most students taking AP Latin already know the practical uses of Latin from previous years' study. AP language courses are not introductions to the language-- every one of them assumes you have studied the language for no less than two years, so nobody is able to just choose, on a whim, to take AP Spanish instead of AP Latin as an elective one year or something. AP Latin is an introductory course in Latin literature and academics surrounding it. As for the point that time in AP Latin could be better spent on a more applicable course such as AP Spanish or AP Chinese, while that could be true, I can't imagine any high school student who is eligible for AP Latin choosing to switch to a Chinese course of study-- there would be no point in it. And while it may be "smarter, " as you put it, to study a modern language, that's more of a comment on language education in general, not AP courses, and is immaterial.

Sorry if this rant is completely unstructured and incoherent, it's past midnight and I'm not taking the effort to edit this 😭

I would take AP Latin if my school offered it :D

AP Pre-calc just seems like the version of Honors Pre-calc but AP level weighted GPA. That seems really nice, I wish my school offered it.

Honestly, I think AP Precalculus should have a reform if they decide to keep it because I mostly see Algebra II stuff for most of the course except for Unit 3 and 4. Unit 4 is not even tested on the exam, undermining the effectiveness of the course. However, I decided to self-study the course since last year in March and I got a 5 which allowed me to take AP Calculus BC one year earlier. Although I agree that AP Precalculus isn't the best course you can take, I feel that the exam should be kept for students who wanted to advance in other math classes earlier than the standard route and the good side is that some colleges do accept the credit despite the backlash.

Latin is still incredibly useful! Many legal and medical terms are derived from Latin and an entire branch of languages — the Romance languages — are derived from it too!

AP Spanish literature is similar to AP literature, so it shouldn’t be banned as the two clases complement each other rather well as a teacher commented to us last year.

Okay for my opinion:
1. AP Pre-Calculus was the first AP class I took and I feel as if they could just make the AP exam harder. And since normally people take Pre-Calculus in their senior year and we would only need 3 years worth of Math in high school (at least for us), high school seniors could have a chance at taking an AP math class since subjects can be bias since Math is kind of the only class where you would have to take different levels of in high school (an a little bit of English) but in science there is Physics, Chemistry, Biology, and you can take each class at any point in high school same thing with history (World, Euro, US) unlike Math where there is Algebra 1, then Geometry, then Algebra II, then Pre-Calc, then Calc+. I guess what I am trying to say is that the order in which you take the classes matter for a math class and not any other class. And for me the class itself wasn’t as easy as the exam was.
2. AP African American History they can change it to AP African History in general(Then again I would be surprised how much the curriculum knows or is willing to teach about African History). I mean they are willing to do AP Euro (I mean the US was created by Europeans). I think it would be really nice for African Americans to learn about themselves and where they came from since America has kept them from this for a while now, the same thing can happen with a class called AP Asian, or something like that. It would be a great way to learn more in-depth material on other ethnic groups (besides AP World)
3. AP Latin was the formal universal language and I think Latin overall is a hard language to learn but it has great potential to show off skills since learning Latin is worth a lot. I am a Latin III student and it’s really hard to actually learn Latin vs getting a good grade in my class since the bar is set very low, it’s kind of like the opposite of AP Pre-Calc, getting a good grade is a lot harder than the exam was in my class.
4. AP Spanish Literature and AP Spanish Language I think should be combined into one class since it’s not quite the universal language, but I feel like Spanish isn’t as hard to learn as some of other languages from native English speakers.
5. AP Drawings. I think they can merge it with a different art class, I don’t see why they would have it into 2 art classes.
These are just some of my opinions! :))

There are states (like Texas) that require public universities to accept all scores of 3 and above. There are also many non-STEM students that need a math credit. In this case, AP Precal may offer a realistic choice to fulfill a math credit without having to take calculus in high school.

Your AP classes don't shorten your college career by much and often won't fulfill major specific courses. As an engineer, only 1 major specific class was fulfilled by my 4 in Physics C. The rest of my 14 AP tests I passed went toward elective credits and generals, so I was able to take less classes each semester and still graduate on time.
