How to Replace the Starter on a Walker MTGHS (Easiest Way)

Step by Step!

Today I'll be showing you the easiest way to replace a starter on a Walker MT GHS commercial zero turn riding mower.

Doing it this way won't require the removal of the mower deck, blower housing or the engine itself.

However, we will be loosening the engine so we can tilt it back, to have enough room to remove and replace the starter.

Starter: Kohler 25-098-24-S (I bought an OEM Kohler starter).

The latest Kohler 25-098-24-S Starter Replaces the older 25-098-20-S and 25-098-21-S starters.

You can do this repair with some basic hand tools, and a socket set.

10mm, 7/16", 13mm, 14mm and 19mm sockets will be needed, as well as a philips head screwdriver and possibly a small propane torch or some penetrating oil if the exhaust manifold studs/nuts are seized.

This repair can be done in under 2 hours if everything comes apart easily.

You may want to schedule a bit of extra time for heating seized nuts/bolts or to clean the cooling fins on the cylinder heads. As well as other various things, like fixing broken wiring, and ordering/replacing a broken hydrostatic fan (as shown in this video).

Nice video and agree on OEM replacement. Based on your customer description of symptoms that sounds like the issue I am experiencing. This integral design really blows. Nice tip on cleaning the grounds. I have this same Walker and the starter is not engaging all of the time and it's getting worse. When it does engage, the engine fires right up. Thanks.

As they say in the Ukraine now that is using your kapusta, well done on this one. 100% correct OEM is the only way to go with this much work needed to remove and replace. Number one tool in the shop comes to the rescue again eh? That Mini Venom Induction Gun is a life saver, i have used it a number of times myself. I wonder if the Big Dog Henry Murawski has one of these?

I do small engine repair too, you can replace starter without taking that bracket off above the muffler, or without taking muffler off.you have enough room. Its a little harder but saves me probably about 20 min. Putting that bracket back on can be a pain sometimes. Its been a gamechanger. Im payed commission so finding this out made one of my most hated jobs into one of my favorite with time vs $$.

For what it’s worth, those random wires that are broken and run to the back are for the optional power dump actuator.

Please, please, please make a video on how to put a carburetor that goes on a 50cc motor together. I bought this motor to go on a bicycle. I've never done anything like this, and the instructions are trash. I have no idea if I'm doing it correctly. I've scoured the internet and have seen tons of comments from others in my position.
Actually, your viewers might love to see you motorize a bicycle. A kit on Amazon is only about $100. $160 for a 100cc. All other videos on this skip parts that those who aren't mechanically inclined need.

Sorry for the lengthy comment. I'll subscribe because your channel may be helpful. Thanks so much!

Hey man, just started getting into your vids and I got a quick question for you. I was at the brother in-laws today helping him get his cub cadet with a 24hp kohler going. He had left it outside without the hood on since last season. We had to remove and unseize the starter to get it to spin and then we could start cranking the motor. We got it running, had to run it on choke for around 5 mins but then it ran without choke. It would just die when engaging the blades so I drove it full speed and then engaged them and the engine knocked pretty bad and it never ramped back up to speed. The gas smelled like old bad gas, kinda like turpentine, we all know the smell. Have you ever seen one with bad gas knock under load? After it was up to temp it seemed to run ok and even idled, but whenever you engage the blades it labors and knocks. Just wondering if you've seen that before. We drained the tank and I told him to put some fresh gas in it. Thanks.
