Thank you for this video. It helped me change the starter in my wife's car, and I had never changed a starter before. I appreciate you 🙏🏿

Heads up, I am in the process of troubleshooting a crank, no start on a2007 Ford Edge. The engine is different than the one shown in this video. Starter is different than in this video. The coolant/ radiator hoses had to be removed to access the starter that was directly underneath it.

Long story short. I checked the fuses, the relays. No bad ones. I volt checked the cable at starter, at relay, at fuse and at ignition switch. All good. I did NOT voltage drop test yet, I'm planning on doing that when I go back out there to see if perhaps the starter is not getting a clean 12v.

Right now when the key is turned it'll spin but the bendrix doesn't go up the shaft and does not engage the flywheel (starter wheel for you strange people)

It is really awkward because initially it was a NO crank NO start when I first arrived to the SUV. I knew there might be a blown fuse or relay was not working etc. First thing I checked, based on observations, was the starter operation. First I check the starter to make sure the casing is grounded, and the main power has 12V. Then I cross the 12V to the S stud WITH the key in the ON position. The SUV fired up, held a clean idle. No check engine light. Now it isn't my vehicle and the older gentleman (80 years old!) said he does not feel comfortable leaving his vehicle where it is at and would like to go home.

So I followed him back, he parked the truck, and I explained that the process is not done and I'll need more time to properly diagnosis his ignition/starting issues. He agreed, but asked if there was any way he can start the truck up again tomorrow so he can go to work. I wrapped a chunky wire around the S stud of the starter and placed it in a safe location, tied up, inside the engine bay. Showed him to put the key in the ON position and to take the wire to the positive terminal to bypass the ignition switch, starter fuse and starter relay. Of course, I mentioned that this is a temporary thing and bad to the electrical system and engine components.

Anyways, today I get a call at 2pm, he stopped at a gas station on the back home from work. And now the starter is a 'crank no start' situation. The bypass no longer works. I showed up, removed the jumper wire, placed a new fuse, new relay and still, the starter free spins without the bendrix engaging.

One thing to note, , I didn't not replace the starter the first time. As I was gradually getting stumped, I thought maybe this starters internals degraded from being shorted... So we replaced the starter with ANOTHER one. (1 core, 2 replacement starters) in the process I got the flash light to look at the flywheel teeth... And they don't seem rounded I saw what seems to be impact marks on the side of the torque converter and parts of the flywheel. It looks like the bendrix shoots out, and bounces off the flywheel or torque converter. I'm a little stumped. It's bolted down good.

... Do I install shims to wedge the starter?? I don't wanna damage the flywheel on a vehicle that is not mine... But I also don't want to leave the old man walking 5 miles to work. ANY ideas would be appreciated @everyone!

The camera angles make it really hard to see which way is the right direction to unloosen the bolts from the starter

is that a 4cyl engine? Because my 3.5 is not in that location? Also is that even and edge?

I don't understand why you dont put the size of the engine in the title. How foolish.
