There’s actually a lot of overlap between laziness and burnout that can make it difficult to differentiate between the two. Burnout is defined as “a negative state of emotional, physical, and mental exhaustion caused by excessive stress and an inability to cope with it.” To educate ourselves and better understand the nature of burnout, especially when we ourselves are at risk, here are a few tell-tale signs that what you’re experiencing right now isn’t actually laziness, but burnout.

There have been times where I feel burned out and not wanting to do anything, but there are also times where I want to be engaged into something but there’s nothing out there to do.

I went through a lot of burnout in college. I was a straight-A student who began to slump during the pandemic. Stuck at home, all alone without our pet who we had to put to sleep two months prior. I never felt like I was doing good enough despite all the work I had done. It wasn't until we got new pets that I began to feel better. And what did my parents do? Ground me. They're very loving, but nobody seemed to understand that I was actually going through burnout after years of self-pressure to be perfect. That year and a half or so continues to haunt me. I wish I could take it all back more than anything.

Used to be a top college student, always a leader in every group project and club. I lead the group to success, earned everyone's respect, final year was my best peak of myself, always hard working and achieve unthinkable feats. After finishing my college i decided to rest for a monthh, but that a month turned 2, and 3, and 4 and so on. I have lost the motivation to do anything at all, my hobbies, eager to learn new things, I am so lazy lately and I hate this version of myself. Trying to change myself as hard as I can, will I get back the glory days that I used to have? anyone with similar problem but managed to climb back up?

I was diagnosed with ASD late last year, and finally have an answer to why I feel like this so often.
Now that I understand autism specific signs of burnout, I feel like I'm better at dealing with it

Yeah I definitely feel this… I start to notice that I just feel like I’m not myself and lost motivation to do most things. I get stressed easily and my burnout makes me procrastinate a lot and I can’t help it sometimes… I’m trying to work on it, but it may take a lot of time for that

I am a therapist and have gone 9 months without taking time off. I was one step away from serious burnout last week. Fortunately, I took my own advice to tend to my own self-efficacy, and I am OFF from WORK for 11 days, effective today. 🙂 I would have done a disservice to my clients and myself had I allowed myself to run on empty.

Currently I'm between an 8-9 on the burnout scale. I've struggled with the symptoms for probably a decade by now, burning out at my first job and not quite recovering from it since then. It's tough when one is burned out from workplace related stressors, yet they need money to go seek mental help for it. It's a vicious cycle... :<

Question, has anyone ever heard of the phrase: “Paralysis by Analysis”? I’d like to talk about that 😅 it’s basically when you’re so fed with information that could be anything that you stop pushing the rest of your thoughts, feelings, and work because you’re stuck thinking and overthinking that same information and it’s rather hard to pull away from it.

Wow all of this makes sense. Im really going through it. I grew more detached, gradually withdrawn, unfeeling and constantly irritable. I don't see a way out of all of this. Its all constant and i get drained. But unfortunately, I work in really public places where i have to be Mr. Personality. Im legit constanly having weird health problems.

Last school year, on the last 2 months, I was not only experiencing burnout on the last stage but I was also in survival brain and let me tell you, YOU DO NOT WANT THAT TO HAPPEN TO YOU, I could barely lift my entire body due to exhaustion!

I lost my job a few months ago. I have new health issues popping up. My 2 older relatives died whom I was close to. And now I try so hard to keep busy to the point of where I’m like “why am I doing this? Why should I get out of bed? I don’t even want to get up and eat breakfast. I put myself out there and nobody wants to be friends with me. Why should getting a job make me feel worth it?” I go a few days feeling depressed and burnt out then the last 2 days of the week I’m feeling “normal”. I need help.

9. It was worse around 2 months ago. I'm a caregiver, and it's worsening again. Pretty sure I'm in the habitual burnout category. Being a caregiver is rough.

The irony of burnouts or stresses - need a holiday to get away and reset. Can't decide where to go or organize one due to "laziness" brought on by burnout and or stress.

I was just playing Warframe, and saw someone in the Q&A channel talking about themself horribly.

You just reminded me of the wisdom I gave to that person.
Thank you.

Oh, I’m both. Thank you tho. And I think most ppl who’ve stayed at their job pre-post Covid are beyond burnt out. But we don’t want to quit because the underlying market conditions are like a suspenseful horror movie.

I’ve been a 8-9 on the burn out scale since I don’t really have a way to vent any emotions and it ain’t my character to show any negative emotions. I’ve been kind of going off of life as “it is what it is, ” “Don’t give up no matter what” and etc.
