Depression and burnout does not just effect cooks. This subject plagues many in their work and home life. My hope is that if we can identify signs and causes of burnout we can start making positive lasting changes to fix it.

And Nate you don't have to acknowledge that you watched this video or anything, I'm not mentioning you for clout, I mentioned you because your video on your own struggles really resonated with me and wanted to show that you aren't alone and provide my own insights from an extremely stressful industry.

The opposite of burnout for me is resilient.

With resilience, you still work hard and do everything someone who is burned out would also do. BUT, you take the time to get your rest. You recover better by pulling yourself back together in a more productive and healthy way, both mentally and physically. You find different solutions when feeling close to being in that “burnout” stage. And in some cases, you may make big changes that you feel will lead you to more positivity if it’s getting too damn tough for you to handle where you’re at.

Very well said, Jason. Speaking from experience, both being a cook as well as a former kitchen manager in my 15 years so far, I’d say you hit the nail on the head on A LOT of things!

Opposite of burnout would be boreout. So the thing here is for us to find our own optimal zone. No one has the perfect work environment, it’s all up to the staff and staffs come and go just like everything else. We have to yes find ourselves, worth and purpose.

Burnout can sneak up on you, and can be pretty rough. Thanks for the video.

When I was close to my clockout time earlier, I thought about looking into this topic tonight. After the past two weeks of overtime, this is exactly the type of consideration and ackowledgement I was hoping to find.

I tend to talk to my co-workers about this undertoe stuff and point out these facts but most give a deer in the headlights stare as if I'm blabbering conspiracy theory.

This is great information!
I was sharing with my friend how exhausted you used to be. Her son is currently experiencing this very thing and we were talking about a possible solution.

Thank you chef! I appreciate this video since I've been thinking quite a bit about the shitload of mental health issues that come with the food service industry and the fact that no one talks about it in the kitchen (needless to say that I'm struggling with them as well). New subscriber here, hoping to see this community grow a lot!

4:10 Hahahahahah, I had a sous chef wash a chicken wing, dry it, and put it in the fryer... albeit, it was for himself to eat. lol

If a chef isn’t burnt out!…. Then this chef is not a chef!…. Just cook some food at home!…. Eat some food at Burger King!…. Like Tupac said!…. ‘All Eyes on Me!’…. Cool song!…. 😘
